About us
Audience Research and Advocacy is part of Science Museum Group's (SMG) Communications department. The team ensures our exhibitions, galleries and learning resources and programmes are developed in a way that is truly audience focused, helping colleagues from across SMG to deliver inspiring, engaging, and memorable learning experiences.

The team does this by working with visitors and people who currently do not see our museums and sites as places for them, researching their needs, wants and expectations and sharing lessons learned.

We are now recruiting for an Audience Research Manager (North) based at the Science and Industry Museum in Manchester working 35 hours per week on a fixed term, maternity cover contract lasting 12 months. Hybrid working is also currently available for this position.

About the role
This is an exciting opportunity to manage the team across SMG, in close collaboration with the Audience Research Manager based in the South, to aid SMG's mission to inspire futures. As Audience Research Manager you will apply your knowledge and experience of audience research to develop and deliver an engaging and inspiring offer for all audiences, supporting SMG's 'Open for All' policy.

You will manage the team, planning and co-ordinating strategic audience research and evaluation. You will use a 'science capital' approach in all your work to encourage equitable focused practice and ensure a broader people feel more at home with science.

In this role you will manage budgets and foster relationships with stakeholders, including commissioning and managing work by external research contractors so that high-quality and actionable findings are delivered to project teams on time and within budget.

About you
Joining us you will have experience of people management, with the ability to manage, influence, motivate and coach team members. You will be a good communicator with the ability to develop relationships, advocate for your work and influence senior stakeholders.

You will be able to manage budgets and projects successfully from conception to delivery, with effective planning and organisational skills and the ability to prioritise and coordinate multiple projects to meet conflicting deadlines.

Crucially, you will have experience planning complex audience research projects, using audience research methodologies, in addition to experience working with people from a range of potential museum visitor groups e.g. families, adults, community groups, education groups, visitors with additional needs.

About the role
Reporting into the Licensing team but managing all the financial processes on behalf of the department, you will undertake and stay on top of a range of finance administrative tasks.

This will include raising invoices and running sales reports as well as tracking royalty statements against advances and Minimum Income Guarantees. You will also assist with picture library requests, responding to enquiries. And as we update our picture library platform, you will ensure the changeover is smooth and the new process is successful.

This role can be based at any of Science Museum Group sites, depending on your preference - London, Bradford, York or Manchester although you will be required to visit London where the team is based. We can also offer hybrid working that includes flexibility to work from home on a regular basis.

Contract: Permanent, Full time 35 hrs
Salary: £26,531 per annum

Engaging and driving an efficient Estates service with great customer service, you will co-ordinate effective financial and administrative management within a busy department. Overall this will ensuring that our Estate operations aligns with best practice, meet the expectations of stakeholders and satisfy all relevant legislation and guidance.

This will include supporting the Estates Manager in overseeing all contractor documentation and compliance including RAMS, procurement paperwork, contracts, permits, work orders, and job sheets. This will also involve conducting risk assessments, and management reporting of the museum's defect reporting system ensuring all requests are processed in a timely manner.

Permanent contract, Full time 35 hours per week

Historic Machinery Technician

Do you have experience as a time-served apprentice in a relevant field or equivalent experience in a relevant mechanical engineering role? Would you like the opportunity to carry out essential maintenance on our working collection of machinery?

About us

Our Gallery Maintenance team plays a crucial role in ensuring the seamless operation of the Science and Industry Museum. We are now recruiting for a Historic Machinery Technician to join the team based at the Science and Industry Museum in Manchester on a full-time, fixed term contract until March 2026.

About the role

As a Historic Machinery Technician, you will ensure our galleries and exhibitions are safe and working by inspecting and testing our galleries and displays before the museum opens, making any necessary repairs for the day ahead. Once the museum opens, you will maintain the unique collection of working textiles and industrial heritage machinery. This will also include collaborating with the Learning team to demonstrate our historic machinery.

You will also work on the £20million refurbishment of our Power Hall, teaming up with the Collections Care team and expert contractors to bring our unique collection of industrial heritage machinery back to operation.

You will consistently follow museum policies and procedures and contribute your technical expertise to the development of new procedures, galleries and exhibitions - providing both hands-on support and supervision.

About you

Joining us you will have experience as a time-served apprentice in a relevant field or have equivalent experience (or a qualification) in a relevant mechanical engineering or technical role. You will have experience of accurately measuring industrial machinery parts and a good knowledge of relevant health and safety regulations, including PUWER.

Crucially, you will be a good communicator with the ability to confidently work with a wide range of people at all levels, including external stakeholders, subject specialists and the public. You will have good attention to detail and the motivation to uphold the high standards of presentation, performance and health and safety practice.

You will be joining a team with a track record of securing donations from a variety of supporters including visitors, philanthropic individuals, corporate donors, charitable foundations, and government. In a typical year, about 25% of SMG's total income comes from fundraising, helping to pay for redevelopment of museum buildings, exhibitions, festivals, learning programmes and accessibility.

About the role
You will play a key role in supporting the growth of our major gifts programme, focusing on strategic engagement with individuals that have the capacity to make 5- and 6-figure donations.

You will be responsible for identifying, developing and delivering compelling proposals, whilst stewarding a portfolio of existing major donors. Spending time building relationships with philanthropists, you will meet with them to discuss our work as well as approach new contacts and finding way to engage new people with our ambitions.

You might spend some of your day writing proposals and reports on projects being undertaken, to be sent to donors and prospects. To make sure you have the support you need, you'll work with our Development Operations team to manage your portfolio and take donors on a fulfilling donor journey, and work with your line manager on strategies for individuals and projects.

Working on a hybrid basis, this position can be based from our Museum in London or Manchester.

As Executive Assistant to the Director of Estates and the Director of Masterplan, you will have an intimate viewpoint of the organisation and the 5 museums within the Group.

Diligently supporting both Directors, you will managing diaries and often act as first point of contact with inbox management. You will also lead the organisation, support and minuting committees and other instrumental meetings. The glue to the efficient management of a proactive and inspired office, you will communicate on behalf of the Directors with key external contacts, and with colleagues at all levels across the organisation.

The role has real scope for impact - consisting of managing a complex and diverse workload to tight deadlines, and with your own projects to lead. Using your expert judgement, you will proactively manage the correspondence and schedule of the Directors, to ensure the skilful co-ordination of their activities across the Group.

We can offer a hybrid working patter for this position, with a mix of office and home working, however you will need to be able to work from our Manchester site 3 days a week.

You will be the first point of contact for any new and existing clients wishing to host an event with us, responding to queries as they come in, and supplying the client with a bespoke proposal based on their event brief. You will conduct site visits with the client and contractors, and will account manage your clients to increase repeat bookings. You will also manage administrative tasks such as raising invoices, purchase orders and creating contracts for confirmed bookings, ensuring that all financial information relating to events is recorded accurately.

Science Museum Group's Enterprises is an integral, profit-making function, allowing our museums to keep our collections accessible whilst investing in our cultural offer and customer experience. The Events team support with promoting our spaces and running amazing events, ranging from conferences, product launches, dinners, receptions, Christmas parties and private events.

To support the Events team across our Northern museums, we are now seeking a Group Event Operations Manager to join us on a full-time permanent basis, based in any of our museums located in Manchester, York, Shildon or Bradford.

Please note - due to the nature of this role, some travel across all our Northern sites is an expectation.

About the role

This role will have prime responsibility for organising and delivering corporate, private and commercial events, as well as maximising on our space for hire at our Northern sites. You will develop and maintain a good relationship with key Museum stakeholders, accredited suppliers and the wider Events Team to ensure the effective delivery of the events calendar. Along with this, you will monitor monthly revenue, expenditure and budgets to measure and develop the profitability of events. You will also work closely with the Event Sales and Marketing Managers to manage event bookings and support wider Museum projects, and will be involved in recruiting, training and developing future Events Managers.

About you

Joining us, you will bring solid event management experience (ideally medium- to large-scale events in multi-use venues), with practical knowledge of the Health & Safety at Work Act, particularly with reference to event management. You will hold line management experience with the ability to train and develop team members and will lead by example with a collaborative and flexible approach. Knowledge and experience of corporate and private hire market will be useful, as will the ability to work with clients from both markets on all levels. In this role, a high level of customer service skills will be crucial

You'll play a key role in expanding our funder base, focusing on strategically growing our income to enable SMG to draw people of all ages to engage with science in an inspirational and informal way.

About the role
Focusing on Trusts, Foundations & Government (TFG) funders, you will support team to raise multi-million-pound income. Managing a portfolio of TFG funder accounts, you will work toward delivering long term, high-value strategic partnerships and significant renewals. You'll provide effective account management and tailored stewardship, whilst developing your own portfolio of new business prospects.

Collaborating with other Development colleagues and key project teams, you will identify opportunities to support or enhance your diverse portfolio. You will also assist the team by being organised and accurate, ensuring accurate record keeping and reporting.

Contract: Full time, Fixed term contract until May 2025 - however there may be a possibility that we can extend the contract or make the position permanent at a later point.
Locations: We can offer a hybrid working pattern from our Manchester, York or London Museums
Salary: £31,500 - £38,500 per annum, experience and location dependant.

You will have experience of securing high value investment with exposure to Trusts, Foundations and Public Sector bids. With great organisational skills and the ability to work to deadlines, you will be able to work on simultaneous projects effectively and accurately.

You will also be a strong communicator with the ability to build fruitful and comprehensive relationships with colleagues throughout the organisation and across the grant making sector.
