We are looking for a researcher to join our research team to investigate the benefits of plant bioactive compounds on animal productivity in a collaborative project with academic and industrial partners. The project is addressing the huge wastage of plant crops that occurs during their processing, through the development of innovative and sustainable valorisation strategies that convert agri-food waste streams into next-generation feed additives to increase animal health and productivity.

In particular, you will focus on the extraction and analysis of phytochemicals from differently processed raw materials and encapsulated formulations, using a range of methodologies, to evaluate their potential for application as feed ingredients.

You will have an undergraduate or masters degree in Food Science and Nutrition, Food Science and Technology, or a closely allied discipline, and a strong background in experimental plant bioactive research with good analytical skills, e.g. chromatography, spectroscopy and bioactivity screening methods. You will be a good organiser, a team player, be highly motivated and able to communicate effectively with other members of the research team.

Are you an ambitious researcher looking for your next challenge? Do you have an established background in Structural Biology, particularly Cryo-Electron Microscopy (cryo-EM), NMR or HDX-MS? Do you want to further your career in one of the UKs leading research intensive Universities?

Based in the laboratories of Professor Alex Breeze and Dr Stephen Muench at the Astbury Centre for Structural Molecular Biology, you will work on an exciting project deciphering the chaperone interaction cycle of fibroblast growth factor receptors (FGFRs).

The project is funded for 9 months by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) and will involve solving high-resolution structures of complexes of FGFR intracellular domain with HSP90 and Cdc37 chaperone components using cryo-EM, as well as investigating dynamics and interaction epitopes using NMR spectroscopy and hydrogen-deuterium exchange (HDX-MS). Exceptional facilities and training are available in Leeds to support the project, including two Titan Krios electron microscopes equipped with the latest detectors as well as state-of-the-art cryoprobe-equipped NMR spectrometers including Bruker Avance III HD Aeon 950 MHz and Waters Synapt HDMS IM-MS, HDX and FPOP mass spectrometers.

You should have a PhD (or close to completion) in structural biology or a closely allied discipline, with experience in cryo-EM and potentially also NMR spectroscopy and/or structural MS, as well as protein expression, purification and labelling for the study of large proteins.

We are looking for an enthusiastic Research Assistant to work on our Wellcome Trust funded grant to understand the how heat stress associated with climate change can affect off-spring health. Climate change is one of the most pressing concerns we have. Understanding the biological basis of how this affects health of the offspring born to mothers that experience extremes of heat and figuring how we can mitigate against these are critical to ensure healthy babies. We are using an interdisciplinary approach combining novel in vitro 3D approaches to mimic maternal and embryo interactions as well as comparative approaches to determine how acute heat stress alters life-course health in offspring. The candidate will be training in state of the start 3D in vitro models as well as Omics approaches including single cell RNA and ATAC sequencing.

An exciting opportunity is available to join the laboratory of Dr Morgan Herod to study mechanisms of hepatitis E virus (HEV) replication, funded by the Medical Research Council. You will use a range of molecular virology approaches to study proteolytic processing of the HEV polyprotein. We recently made the exciting discovery that the polyprotein of HEV is not processed by a viral protease, thus implicating a host protease as critical in controlling viral replication. This position will build on these results and focus on identifying and characterising the role of host proteases in HEV replication, and define the role for HEV polyprotein domains in the virus lifecycle. The position provides an opportunity to conduct ground-breaking research into virus-host interactions and generate a new paradigm for RNA virus replication. To achieve this, it will exploit recently developed HEV culture and replicon systems, to conduct a functional proteomic analysis.

You will have a background in molecular biology and expertise in the study of viruses. You will join a team of researchers focusing on mechanisms of positive strand RNA virus replication and host-cell interactions. You will be organised and willing to work collaboratively as part of a team.

Are you an ambitious researcher looking for your next challenge? Do you have a background in atmospheric science? Do you want to further your career in one of the world’s leading climate-research groups?

You will join a team of climate and atmospheric scientists at the University of Leeds to work on two complementary projects funded by the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and Department for Transport (DfT) research programme “Jet zero: Aviation’s non-CO2 impacts on the climate”. You will work with Dr Alex Rap, Prof Amanda Maycock and Prof Piers Forster, employing the SOCRATES radiative transfer scheme and line-by-line models to quantify the contrail radiative forcing from climate-optimised aircraft designs and alternative fuels. You will also collaborate closely with the other researchers involved in the projects at the University of Southampton, Imperial College London, and University College London, as well as with our project partners Airbus and Rolls-Royce.

The ‘Contrail Assessment of Future Aircraft and Propulsion Architectures’ project is a collaboration between research groups at the University of Southampton and the University of Leeds. The overarching aim of the project is to assess the contrail climate impact of future low-CO2 aircraft by incorporating rigorous analysis of turbulence/microphysics interactions into climate-optimised aircraft design. The ‘Contrails from SAF and H2 combustion; from lab experiments to global mitigation policy’ is a partnership between Imperial College London, University College London and the University of Leeds. The aim of the project is to assess the impact of alternative aircraft fuels (sustainable aviation fuels, SAF, and hydrogen) on contrail formation and radiative forcing and model the feedback arising from the different aviation climate impacts on future aviation policy.

You will have, or be close to obtaining, a PhD in the field of Atmospheric Science (or a closely related field). You will have knowledge of atmospheric and/or climate modelling and evidence of a strong commitment to publishing scientific results at an international level. Experience of radiative transfer modelling and quantifying aviation climate impacts are desirable.

This is an outstanding opportunity for you to work on an exciting project in the Division of Oral Biology within the Leeds School of Dentistry, in collaboration with Haleon and colleagues at synchrotron facilities. As part of a multidisciplinary team, you will be using dual imaging and diffraction to assess the protective mechanism of action on hierarchical mineralised tissue structures in dental enamel brought about by the application of new formulations of a widely available consumer product. The project involves the use of routine laboratory imaging techniques and the dual imaging and diffraction beamline at Diamond Light Source to study and image oriented structures at multiple length-scales in hierarchically organised mineralised tissues, with and without treatment.

You will have experience working with diseased enamel affected by either caries lesions or erosive wear. Have a first degree related to dentistry or the physical sciences. You will also have experience working both independently and as part of multidisciplinary teams. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are essential, as well as a willingness to work flexibly and travel internationally and nationally to synchrotron facilities and collaborating institutes.

We are seeking to appoint a two-year postdoctoral research fellow to work on a funded multi-centre research project evaluating the impact of unexplained chronic cough on the ability to undertake activities of daily living and underpinning mechanisms associated with cough frequency post exercise.

You will be embedded within a vibrant and engaging multidisciplinary research group, working alongside an internationally recognised team of exercise physiologists and respiratory medicine academics based in the Faculty of Biological Sciences and Faculty of Medicine and Health. Alongside the core project, you will also have the opportunity to contribute to on-going studies across the pulmonary exercise physiology research group (led by Dr. Oliver Price) and collaborate with external co-investigators based at Hull York Medical School, Kings College London and University College London.

To apply for this role, you must have a PhD (or be close to completion) in exercise / respiratory physiology or closely related discipline. Overview of the Role
Are you an ambitious researcher looking for your next challenge? Do you have a background in Vascular Biology or Thrombosis and Haemostasis? Do you want to further your career in one of the UK’s leading research-intensive Universities?

A position for postdoctoral Research Fellow (1.0 FTE), funded by a programme grant of the British Heart Foundation, is available in the lab of Professor Robert Ariëns, based in the LIGHT laboratories at the University of Leeds. In this role you will play a key role in a research team that is studying the influence of fibrin structure on the stability of blood clots and the risk of venous thromboembolism, using Affimers to target specific parts of the protein. In this position, you will particularly be leading on the in-vitro characterisation of protein structure and function.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
As Research Fellow your main duties will include:

Working with and in support of Prof Ariëns’ research programme to ensure the project is successfully completed;
Generating and pursuing original research ideas in the appropriate subject area;
Developing research objectives and proposals and contributing to setting the direction of the research project and team including, where appropriate preparing proposals for funding in collaboration with colleagues;
Evaluating methods and techniques used and results obtained by other researchers and to relate such evaluations appropriately to your own work;
Communicating or presenting research results through publication or other recognised forms of output;
Preparing papers for publication in leading international journals and independently writing reports;
Working both independently and also as part of a larger team of researchers, engaging in knowledge-transfer activities where appropriate and feasible;
Maintaining your own continuing professional development and acting as a mentor to less experienced colleagues as appropriate;
Contributing to the research culture of the School, where appropriate;
Contributing to the training of both undergraduate and postgraduate students, where appropriate, including assisting with the supervision of projects in areas relevant to the project.
