The Role

A Postdoctoral Research Associate position is available to pursue experimental research in the field of atomic and laser physics within the Durham Quantum Light and Matter group. The position is associated with a project funded by the EURAMET - the metrology component of the European Union Horizon 2020 Programme.

The post holder will be expected to display the initiative and creativity, together with the appropriate skills and knowledge, required to lead and develop experiments to meet the project goals. The post holder will be expected to be familiar with narrowband and tunable scientific lasers, and have experience in atomic physics, quantum optics or laser cooling and trapping. The post holder is expected to be able to work effectively both independently and as part of a small research team. It is expected that the post holder will enhance the international contacts of the group through the presentation of work at international conferences. The post holder will also be expected to aid in the supervision of graduate students within the group as well as contributing to the undergraduate teaching within the Department.

The aim is to explore the use of reconfigurable arrays of trapped ultra-cold atoms in next generation optical atomic clocks. This post is part of the CoCoRiCo consortium, which consists of 4 National Metrology Institutes and 5 university research groups from across Europe. Your role will be to contribute to the development new techniques for trapping and manipulating atoms, as well as studies of systematic errors in tweezer array atomic clocks.

The successful candidate will be required to take a lead role in all aspects of the project, contributing directly to the experiment and working closely with Prof Matthew Jones, collaborators within the CoCoRiCo consortium and outside, as well as graduate students and other members of the research group. You will be expected to undertake an active role in the laboratory activity.

We are very excited to be offering an opportunity a Postdoctoral Research Associate (PDRA) (maternity cover) to join our research team. The team includes the co-applicants: Professor Ari Saranandom (Department of Biosciences), Professor Fuschia Sirois (Department of Psychology), Dr Ladan Cockshut (Assistant Professor for Research Culture and Co-I for Evaluation), Dr Beth Upex (Head of Technical Skills, Department of Archaeology) and Andrew Moss (Research Culture Manager, Research and Innovation Services), 3 PDRAs, an external consultant and a Senior Project Manager. This role will be responsible for conducting ethnographic research into governance across selected research institutes and will co-design and deliver pilot projects aimed at improving governance structures. This post-holder will be an integral member of our research team, working with colleagues from a diverse range of departments and disciplines to deliver this ambitious project.

The successful applicant will be expected to:

• Conduct ethnographic research, including interviews and participant observation, across selected university research institutes
• Conduct literature reviews and examine documentation relating to research governance
• Use an action research approach to deliver co-designed research governance interventions
• Use a mixed methods approach to collect and analyse data, including ethnographic research in committees, creating and deploying surveys via Qualtrics and analysing quantitative data using SPSS

A laboratory technician post (Grade 6) is available for 2 years (full time, but with the option for flexible working hours) in the laboratory of Professor Keith Lindsey, Department of Biosciences, Durham University to work on a multidisciplinary industrial biotechnology and bioengineering project on environmental processing and recovery of metals.

The world in 2040 is expected to need 4 times as many critical minerals/metals for clean energy technologies as it does today. To achieve this goal, it is clear that environmental processing and recovery of minerals and metals will play a critical strategic role not only in sustainable resource management but also in waste reduction, pollution prevention, and the transition towards a more circular and environmentally conscious economy. This project unites specialists from across the UK who possess knowledge in essential technologies related to bio-extraction and bio-recovery of metals. We will collaborate to establish an open knowledge Hub aimed at enhancing ongoing projects of engineered organisms at various technology readiness levels that tackle important environmental issues associated with mineral extraction, urban mining, industrial waste, and legacy nuclear waste. The Engineering Biology Hub aims to provide a powerful suite of engineering biology tools and approaches that represent sustainable and efficient solutions to address many of the environmental challenges concerning metal waste and metal-scarcity.

The technician will support this project through the functional characterization of bacterially biorecovered copper nanoparticles (CuNPs). Bio-synthesised CuNPs represent a potential application of biorecovery, as part of a circular economy approach to reduce the need for newly extracted copper and chemical processes for NP synthesis. We will 1) test the ability of biosynthesised CuNPs (using Shewanella oneidensis) to replicate the effects of chemically synthesised CuNPs on plant root growth (a bioassay for CuNP functionality), and 2) use CuNPs from engineered S. oneidensis, optimised for NP production. This £12 M project, funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, links with a second large project with the water industry, to develop methodologies to prevent tree root ingress into built structures, and the successful candidate will have the opportunity to work with team members both within Durham and also in other participating UK Universities.

The Research Operations Team is part of Research and Innovation Services (RIS) and provides comprehensive support to academic and PSS colleagues across the lifecycle of a research project. The team comprises pre- and post-award services, consultancy support, and systems implementation and development. The Role

We invite applications for a Post-doctoral research associate (PDRA) to join the Department of Earth Sciences at Durham university. The role is to work with Prof Madeleine Humphreys (Durham) and Dr Kate Dobson (Strathclyde) on a project funded by the European Research Council, "Storage and Eruption of Mushy Magma Systems" (STEMMS). The position is fixed term for 12 months.

The aim of the overall project is to explore the links between crystal mush textures, magmatic volatiles and the mobility of stored magmas within the crust. This position will use 3D image processing of numerically simulated to examine how crystal shape changes during impingement and progressive overgrowth of a crystal mush. The results will be compared to natural examples of crystal mush textures and used to help interpret crystal shape and crystallisation environment in natural settings. The PDRA will be based at Durham University but will also spend periods of time at Strathclyde. The PDRA will work with the PI and wider partners to interpret the results and produce high-impact publications based on their findings. The PDRA will join the vibrant volcanology group at Durham University and will further benefit from the Department's mentoring programme for early career researchers. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the general activities of the volcanology group and participate actively in the intellectual life of the department.

We are looking for an enthusiastic Research Associate to join Cardiff’s team to help deliver the HyNTS project.

This position is funded through a Strategic Innovation Funding collaboration on the HyNTS project. The aim of the project is to investigate the compression of hydrogen for use in energy networks. It will test repurposing of existing compression equipment to determine if it could be used for 100% hydrogen transmission. 

Project partners include Cardiff University, Siemens Industrial Turbomachinery, Northern Gas Networks, Southern Gas Networks, DNV Services UK, Premtech and Cullum Detuners. Under the beta phase, the project has been awarded £33.3 million ($42.8 million).

Periodic trips to the FutureGrid research facility are expected, and the candidate would need to engage in and review industrially led research activities.

• Work with NASA center leadership to identify, track and manage center priorities, issues and requests

• Work with center product owners and CACI’s delivery team to align priorities to product backlogs and in PI planning events

• Assist in managing performance against SLA metrics and preparing/delivering center specific status reports and information

• Work with Team CACI NCAPS leadership in strategic planning, understanding of NASA/Center processes and priorities, and participate in monthly program review meetings

You’ll bring these qualifications:

• Must be a U.S. citizen with ability to obtain Public Trust clearance.

• 10+ years of relevant experience

• Knowledge of NASA business systems and software development processes and procedures

• Proven track record of effectively managing customer relationships.

• Prior experience successfully identifying, managing, and resolving customer satisfaction issues.

These qualifications would be nice to have:

• Active Secret security clearance

• Prior experience leading a NASA research center

The proposed salary range for this position is:

$86,800-$191,000

The Welsh Institute of Performance Science (WIPS) is a collaborative partnership between the Faculty of Life Sciences and Education at University of South Wales (USW) and Sport Wales Institute (SWI). WIPS was launched to promote, facilitate and conduct multidisciplinary research on behalf of SWI. Specifically, we work closely with theme lead staff at SWI in Athlete Development, Health and Wellbeing, and Athlete Environments, to answer high-performance questions. In doing so, WIPS aims to support the development and performance of athletes across Wales both in the short and long term. WIPS also strives to secure research funding from International Governing Bodies and European research funding councils to ensure a sustained approach to research.



USW are seeking a Research Fellow to support the general research activities of WIPS. The role is positioned to support research across all themes, with a specific focus on sport psychology and coaching science, and is aligned with the WIPS’ Research Steering Group (https://www.swansea.ac.uk/sports-science/astem/wips/areas-expertise/).



The successful applicant will be motivated, organised, and able to work both independently and as part of a wider team. The ability to work to deadlines, with excellent attention to detail, as well as good interpersonal and communication skills are essential. The successful candidate will have a good undergraduate (honours) and postgraduate research degree (e.g., PhD; ProfDoc) aligned to the disciplines (e.g., sport psychology, coaching, performance) associated with the role. Extensive and highly competent qualitative and quantitative research skills are essential, with extensive working knowledge of the design and analysis of larger projects.



The successful candidate will be expected to undertake a hybrid-model of working, which will include working remotely, at USW, and at Sport Wales Institute (Sofia Gardens, Cardiff) to facilitate the timely completion of research projects. They should also expect to travel to other locations to meet sport representatives as the need occurs and at times dictated by the nature of elite sport environments.
