We are now recruiting for 6 x Collection Project Officers to join the NCC Collections Team. These are full-time roles, working 35 hours per week on a fixed term contract until October and December 2025.

About the role

The Collection Project Officer role offers a unique opportunity to work as part of a fast-paced team gaining practical experience working with one of the world's greatest science, technology, and medicine collections. You will also be crucial in making the collections stored at the National Collections Centre available digitally through the Science Museum Group's Collections Online portal.

The 6 CPO vacancies cover 3 different projects. As a successful candidate, you will be selected to work on a specific project - to be discussed at interview.

About you

Joining us you will bring practical and relevant experience of object handling, as well as an understanding of collections care and preventive conservation. You will have good attention to detail alongside the ability to work efficiently with desire to maintain consistent high standards. You will be able to work well as part of a multi-disciplinary team, with the ability to communicate effectively with colleagues to ensure you can work together to meet deadlines. You will be able to assist with the manual movement of our collections, using manual handling techniques and equipment effectively, for example trolleys.

Science Technician (Full or Part Time) Hours: 37 hours per week / term time only plus training days - Monday to Friday. About the role

As Documentation Officer you will have a group-wide reach, working with diverse collections data across the organisation. As well as championing our cataloguing and documentation standards, ensuring that data is consistent and accurate, you will also use your data skills to support the Conservation team in building and improving the information we hold and share about our collections.

You will be working on a project: Empowering Safety: Hazardous Materials Awareness, Identification and Management. This project aims to develop a comprehensive hazardous materials library and dataset, that can be shared with the wider sector, both to raise awareness and increase research and understanding, including around safe and practical management. Ultimately helping to increase access and knowledge of these fascinating but hazardous collections.

You will play a crucial role in ensuring high quality data is generated and maintained. You will use innovative techniques to record and improve collections data. Alongside this you will be responsible for improving data in our Collections Information Systems. You will feed into recommendations on taxonomy and how this data could best be recorded and shared.

About you

Joining us you will have some experience of museum documentation and cataloguing, in addition to an interest in developing data management skills. You will possess a good level of attention to detail and the ability to follow procedures consistently and accurately.

Crucially, you will have experience of handling museum collections, including an awareness of basic collections care. You will have good IT skills, data skills and the ability to work with a Collections Management System as well as a knowledge of museum documentation standards.

About the role

This role will concentrate on cataloguing our archives, working closely with curatorial teams to prioritise work in line with the Science Museum Group's plans. The focus and much of the work will be on box listing or creating collection level descriptions for the entirety of the archives, with regular time spent on detailed cataloguing of prioritised archives.

You will be managed by the Curatorial team at based at the NCC but will work closely with the Group Archives Manager to ensure consistency and to meet KPIs. While most of the time will be spent on cataloguing activity, you will sometimes be expected to support access to researchers by assisting with enquiries, contributing to promotional activities, and providing cover for reading room supervision.

About you

Joining us, you will have relevant experience with Archives or Records Management and experience handling, storing and documenting archive collections. You will be able to embrace our commitment to making archive collections accessible to diverse audiences.

We are recruiting for a Group Conservation Scientist to join our team based at the NCC at the Science and Innovation Park in Wroughton, Swindon. This is a full-time role working 35 hours per week on a permanent contract with hybrid working also available.

About the role

You will be working on a project that aims to develop a comprehensive hazardous materials library and dataset, that can be shared with the wider sector, both to raise awareness and increase research and understanding, including around safe and practical management.

Bringing your knowledge and expertise of chemical science and adapting it to collections, you will research our collections and be responsible for designing effective processes for the management of hazardous collections and sharing that knowledge both internally and externally. You will also set up and roll out processes for efficiently using our scientific equipment across the Group. There will be potential for line management responsibilities, and you will matrix manage as the projects require.

About you
Joining us you will have substantial experience of scientific analysis using a range of equipment, in addition to experience working with a range of hazardous materials and implementing risk management approaches.

Crucially, you will be able to assess complex situations and generate solutions and you will have the ability to apply your scientific expertise to cultural collection material and ensure practical advice and work is fit for purpose.

1. To work alongside other members of the Liaison and Diversion Service with an allocated number of individual service users who have been in contact with the Criminal Justice System (CJS). Collections Care Assistant

About us

At the Science and Innovation Park (SIP) we have an exciting programme of capital (construction) works planned to our stores in 2024 to improve the conditions SMG objects are located in. These works include roof repairs, drainage works and the fitting out of a large new-build store.

We are now recruiting for a Collections Care Assistant to work alongside our project teams during the relocation of objects and construction work.

This role is a fixed-term contract until the end of December 2024, working full-time - 35 hours per week based at the National Collections Centre at the Science and Innovation Park in Wroughton, Swindon.

About the role

This is a great opportunity to gain 'hands on' experience of working with collections. As Collections Care Assistant you will work closely with the other members of the Conservation & Collections Care team, supporting the work of the Conservation team, and more widely the work of the Documentation, Registration, Photography and Curatorial teams.

You will be assisting with the condition reporting, care, cleaning and packing of objects from the collections storage area using best practice to meet strategic and statutory requirements.

You will undertake conservation object cleaning of collection items where appropriate and help to install objects into the gallery. You will ensure that these tasks are carried out in a safe and secure manner to comply with current legislation and following best professional practice.

About you

Joining us you will have good knowledge or practical experience of working with historic collections coupled with an understanding of collections care, particularly object handling. You will have good communication skills which will enable you to work well as part of a team.

You will be able to work well under pressure and use prioritising skills to meet deadlines calmly and effectively. Crucially you will have the ability to work to a high standard of accuracy with good attention to detail.

We are seeking to employ an enthusiastic and proficient technician to provide essential support for the school’s highly achieving Science Faculty. You will give a practical, technical service to members of the teaching staff through the preparation and provision of equipment, apparatus and chemicals for experiments and demonstrations.
The successful candidate will need to demonstrate their ability to work effectively within a team, and under their own initiative. Although a sound scientific knowledge, experience of handling and preparing chemicals, and assembling apparatus could be advantageous, this is not essential as full training will be provided if you are enthusiastic about science and keen to learn.
Working within a team of experienced technicians, and under the guidance of a Senior Technician, you will support students aged 11 to 19 in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Health and Safety will be a key part of your role, and you may also carry out Portable Appliance Testing within the Science Faculty; training for this and other aspects of the role will be provided where appropriate.
