We are looking for an inventive and enthusiastic postdoctoral researcher to work on a Wellcome Trust Funded Grant studying the molecular controllers of the immune response to inflammation, cancer, and tissue damage using Drosophila as a model system with the ultimate aim of identifying novel therapeutic strategies for inflammatory disease.

The Opportunity:

This is a 3 year, full-time postdoctoral position to work within the lab of Professor Will Wood at the University of Edinburgh. This represents a unique opportunity to be part of a multi-disciplinary team undertaking cross-species research in inflammation and innate immunity, utilising a powerful live imaging approach to understanding how efferocytosis regulates the fate and function of macrophages during health, injury and infection. The post-holder will undertake the Drosophila elements of this project, but will interface with mammalian-focused PDRAs to enable rapid identification of the key, evolutionarily conserved genetic signatures and mechanisms controlling inflammation.

We are seeking to appoint a Grade 6 Research Assistant for an externally-funded project examining the use of baby carriers and slings in the UK. The role will involve designing and conducting a systematic review of research evidence, designing and conducting online surveys with families and practitioners, critically evaluating existing guidance and making recommendations. The post in time-limited due to external funding and may be conducted full-time (35 hours per week) over 6 months or part-time (minimum 17.5 hours per week) for up to 12 months.

The Durham Infancy & Sleep Centre (DISC) is a research centre of the Department of Anthropology & Faculty of Social Sciences. This is a 1-year researcher role on a project funded by the National Institute of Health Research's School for Public Health Research. We are seeking either a Grade 7 PhD holder,or Grade 6 graduate to fill this role. The project, COAST (Evaluating COastal rural communities' Active and Sustainable Travel), uses an ethnographic approach to explore responses to active and sustainable travel interventions in rural and coastal County Durham and Cornwall. Methods used are likely to include geonarratives, go-along interviews and photo-elicitation interviews. The postholder will be based at Durham and will conduct intensive fieldwork in the east of County Durham, working closely with a researcher at the University of Exeter who will conduct fieldwork in Cornwall. Senior Research Technician

The School of Earth and Environmental Sciences is seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and experienced technician to cover a period of maternity leave for 12 months, predominantly to support our Palaeoclimate, Image and Geochemistry research laboratories.

You will be responsible for:
the operational management of these research lab areas- carrying out lab inductions, training staff and students in technical and clean lab procedures, maintaining stock levels, servicing, and operating analytical equipment; overseeing lab safety, assessing risk, and encouraging sustainable lab practices.

A short-term post-doctoral research assistant required to help complete a manuscript describing the role of ER-phagy in initiation of pancreatic cancer. This will involve analysis of mouse models deficient in ER-phagy, human tissues, spatial transcriptomic datasets and manipulation of animals using AAV. The Opportunity:

This is an exciting opportunity to build-on and complete an established and well framed project investigating the earliest stages of cancer. It involves the innovative integration of transcriptional and mutation data to effectively look back in time at the past transcriptional states of cells that subsequently grew into tumours. The project involves hands-on work with animal models, molecular biology and high-throughput computational analysis of the resulting data. There is a clear framework for the completion of the project and scope to define new work building on the initial set of findings. The post-holder will join a dynamic and enthusiastic collaboration between the Taylor and Boulter labs at the Institute of Genetics and Cancer (IGC). The Taylor lab specialises in high-throughput computational analysis to understand the mechanisms of mutagenesis and the consequences of mutations. The Boulter lab focusses on the cellular and molecular mechanisms of liver development, repair and oncogenesis. Both labs are based in the MRC core-funded MRC Human Genetics Unit which is part of the wider IGC.

We are looking for a talented early career researcher in fluid dynamics and/or machine learning, with expertise in computational methods to work on the project “A new understanding of turbulence via a machine-learnt dynamical systems theory” (UKRI Frontier Research Guarantee for an ERC Starting Grant).

The Opportunity:

The dynamical systems view of turbulence, in which the flow “pinballs” between exact coherent states (ECS), is a promising way to unify our statistical understanding of turbulence with a mechanistic understanding of the complex self-sustaining processes that underpin it. Historically, this approach has been restricted to weakly turbulent flows due to the difficulty of identifying and converging ECS, and this project will seek to use advances in machine learning and automatic differentiation to overcome these barriers.

A core part of this project is the development and interpretation of state-of-the-art machine learning (ML) models to model and predict high Reynolds number fluid flows. This will be the focus of this particular postdoc, where the post-holder will work on a combination of: (1) low order models for high-dimensional flows, e.g. generated via self-supervised learning, to parameterise the inertial manifold; (2) super-resolution/data-assimilation strategies incorporating the flow solver in the loss; (3) the application of interpretability techniques to attempt to reverse-engineer large ML models to extract latent learned physical concepts. The latter area is developing rapidly in the context of large language models but has not been explored in detail for physical problems.

There are significant computational resources set aside specifically for the post-holder, along with PI, to train large models (access to a dedicated GPU cluster with ~160 A100/H100 cards). There is scope for a strong candidate to shape the research direction.

This post will involve the development of integrated circuits (IC) for a wide range of embedded AI hardware applications such as AI accelerators, autonomous sensors, biomedical implants, robotic systems, adiabatic computing, and hardware security modules, etc. It will also involve validating and demonstrating the performance of the developed ICs in solving real-world problems.



This role is UE07 and is available on a fixed term basis initially for up to 24 months.

Your skills and attributes for success:

A PhD in Electronics, or an undergraduate/master degree plus industrial experiences as a senior IC designer.
Proven track record of research or industrial experience in analogue and mixed-signal IC design.
Experienced with EDA design flows; has one or more successful IC tape-outs and is experienced with IC testing.
Capable of working collaboratively with researchers from different disciplines or technical background, able to develop and maintain effective working relationships.
Capable of working independently, exercising a high degree of initiative and demonstrating a pro-active and flexible approach to work.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Research Support Administrator to join the College of Science and Engineering on a permanent basis.

In this role, the successful candidate will provide comprehensive research management support, administration and process advice and guidance to Project Co-ordinators and Principal Investigators across the college, fostering a strong customer service culture.

The postholder will be the main point of contact between College staff and University Services Research Support Office staff to clarify, and implement administrative requirements and resolve issues in order to provide effective research management support to Principal Investigators.

Furthermore, you will provide administration support to the College Research Office.

This post is full time (35 hours per week) and offered on an open ended basis.
