The Opportunity:

About you:

Are you energetic, good with children and enthusiastic about science? Are you looking to gain key experience for your future career in primary education; performing arts or youth work? We are seeking workshop presenters to conduct engaging science workshops, as well as talented performers to captivate audiences during our science shows in primary schools across Scotland. You will have confident communication skills, a passion for presenting and some experience of working with children. Performance skills and some knowledge of science is desirable but not essential but an interest in learning is a must. Confident drivers, with at least 1 year driving experience strongly preferred. Applicants must live within a 30-minute commute of Edinburgh or Glasgow city centres.

Training sessions and rehearsals will take place throughout January 2025 in Edinburgh. Training/rehearsals paid currently at £84.00 per full day (+ holiday pay).

The Opportunity:

Child sexual exploitation and abuse (CSEA) is a global problem that requires a global response. However, the lack of reliable and comprehensive data relating to CSEA is a major inhibitor to developing more effective and evidence driven prevention and response strategies and policies.

Many gaps in the evidence-base around the prevalence and nature of CSEA globally still exist with many ethical and methodological challenges in this area. This is a major inhibitor to developing more effective and evidence driven prevention and response strategies and policies. Without data and analysis, programmes are more difficult to design, deliver and evaluate; evidence is difficult to generate and credibly defend; narratives and definitions that frame the issue are difficult to construct; policy is difficult to advocate for and funding is difficult to access. Without high-quality data that can guide policy and programmes, children continuing to be at risk for child sexual exploitation and abuse and perpetrators have impunity.

This post will provide senior research leadership through a Professorial Chair position and also serve as the Director of European Hub for Childlight – seeking to grow and improve our data partnerships, prevalence estimates and impact in this region. The postholder will also be required to focus on other regions and/or global data projects as needed.

The School of Physics and Astronomy is seeking to appoint a strong candidate to a full-time, fixed-term research position within the Edinburgh Nuclear Physics Group.

The appointed PDRA will work in the group of Prof. Marialuisa Aliotta (PI) to conduct research in experimental nuclear astrophysics for the UKRI-funded ERC Advanced Grant “NUCLEAR: NUclear Clustering Effects in Astrophysical Reactions”. The appointed PDRA will support and develop the experimental programme of nuclear reaction studies at surface- and underground facilities. Jointly with the PI, you will supervise PhD students and support the execution of all experimental activities and related data analysis and interpretation. You will also conduct and support R-matrix global fits of experimental data and contribute to the evaluation of astrophysical reaction rates.

In addition, s/he will be expected to co-supervise research students and to contribute to some teaching. The Opportunity:

This role is a unique opportunity to support the Roslin Institute’s award-winning PER programme, which aligns with and is supported by strategic research funding from the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council. This funding supports research into genes and traits for healthy animals, and prevention and control of infectious diseases, allowing Roslin’s experts to develop the Institute’s overall research themes of sustainable agriculture, controlling diseases and enhancing health.

The Department of Chemical and Process Engineering (CPE) within the Faculty of Engineering is seeking to recruit a Research Associate to carry out theoretical modelling work to explore decarbonisation technologies including biomass valorisation, CO2 conversion, waste plastic recycling, etc. This position is one of the three PDRA positions to be recruited for one UKRI funded project with an overall aim at reshaping a fossil-free feedstock carbon supply to accelerate net-zero.

The position requires in-depth knowledge of large-scale computation, thermodynamic analysis and technical communication thus prior experience in Quantum Mechanics (QM) Density Functional Theory (DFT) modelling, thermodynamic analysis, mechanism and kinetics investigation, and a brief background of waste valorisation is required. The postholder will be responsible on computational modelling of the reaction mechanism and exploration of the thermodynamic and kinetics of the waste valorisation processes, evaluating the role of operating conditions and catalyst performance, predicting the yield of the key products based on the theoretical mechanism and kinetic results. The postholder will work closely with the principal investigator, other Research Associate, and the PhD students, that involved in this project.

As a Research Associate, under the general guidance of a research leader, you will develop research objectives, play a lead role in relation to a specific project/s or part of a broader project, conduct individual and/or collaborative research, contribute to the development of new research methods, and contribute to the securing of funds for research. You will write up research work for publication, individually or in collaboration with colleagues, and disseminate the results via peer reviewed journal publications and presentation at conferences. We are looking for a Postdoctoral Research Associate to investigate the mucosal immune and inflammatory response during murine infection with the parasite Schistosoma mansoni, focusing on refined cellular immunology readouts.

This post is advertised as full-time (35 hours per week).

The specific aim of this position will be to reveal core immune and inflammatory features of the mucosal response to S. mansoni, with a focus on defining the role of macrophages, dendritic cells and CD4+ T cells in induction vs regulation of intestinal and/or pulmonary tissue damage and repair during murine infection with this parasite. Part of this will involve linking immune readouts with sequencing, microbiota and metabolic data sets to identify key mechanisms that promote or regulate mucosal inflammation against S. mansoni.

They will enjoy working in a dynamic environment and be able to work on their own initiative as well as being an active team member. The role will report to the APRIL Hub Director (Principal Investigator), with on-going engagement with other researchers in the Hub as well as academic leads.

This role is UE07 and is available on a fixed term basis for up to 60 months.

Your skills and attributes for success:

-A 1st class undergraduate degree and a PhD in Electronics or AI, or a clearly related area, with a proven contact with Circuits and Systems Design, or a closely related area or equivalent industry experience.
-Experience in AI tools for Circuits and Systems Design automation; Experience with EDA tools.
-A track record of research in AI, with a specific focus on Circuits and Systems Design or a closely related area.
-Experience in delivering research project results in a Circuits and Systems Design and/or AI context; i.e. a record of peer-reviewed journal and conference papers in a relevant area.
-Ability to be adaptive and accepting of new ideas and a willingness to approach new challenges and adjusts plans to meet new priorities
