The Role and Department

Research and Innovation Services (RIS) provides guidance, expert advice and hands-on support for all aspects of research and research-related work, including securing funding, working with partners, undertaking knowledge exchange, demonstrating impact, commercialising outputs, ensuring good research practice and supporting professional development.

Durham has ambitious plans to grow our institutional research income and recognise that to enable this we need to make significant investments in our research community and environment. We are established the Durham University Strategic Research Fund (SRF) in 2022 to offer our academics the chance to bid for substantial investments to be made into our research community through new appointments.

The Programme Manager will be the primary contact for the SRF, working closely with the Director of Research and Innovation Services (Research Development and Operations) to manage the fund and support the wider academic community in engaging with the opportunity and delivering the successful projects. This will involve (for example);

• leading on all communications and development of materials related to the SRF;


• dealing with queries on the SRF and discussing suitability of early stage SRF ideas with applicants


• providing support to the decision-making panel (e.g. collating call documentation, disseminating paperwork, minuting meetings, collating feedback for applicants);


• providing costing support for all SRF proposals;


• supporting the development of Full Business Cases (including for example in areas such as risk management, financial sustainability and governance);


• liaising with Departments, Faculties and University Research Institutes to ensure approvals are in place for SRF proposals and awards;


• collaborating with other professional service directorates (such as Durham's Development and Alumni Relation Office, DARO) to explore cross-division opportunities (e.g. for match funding);


• managing post-award of SRF investments including reporting on progress and managing annual review meetings;


• supporting successful teams with delivery of their SRF awards including (for example) supporting queries relating to HR and recruitment of new staff.


• supporting the parallel "pre-SRF" process to identify early-stage ideas including (for example) highlighting the opportunity to the academic community, discussing ideas, managing the pitch event, building a pipeline of projects, and offering other general support.

We are looking for a candidate with strong project management skills, with an ability to work with a diverse array of stakeholders, managing multiple projects and processes at any given time. We will expect the successful candidate to be very proactive, working to help identify ways to improve processes and better support our academic community to help ensure the success of the SRF.

The Programme Manager will be line managed by the Senior Strategic Project Manager, Research and Innovation Services. You will work alongside various teams within RIS, particularly the Research Development and Operations teams, and with other professional service directorates across Durham including (for example) HR, Finance and the Development and Alumni Relations Office (DARO).

There will also be an expectation that at time the Programme Manager will support other ongoing initiatives led by RIS, dependant on workload. This will be managed at the discretion of the Director of Research and Innovation Services.

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the field of quantitative geomorphology who will work on cascading landslide and flood hazards in the Garhwal Himalaya, India. The research project "Dynamic Risks for Cascading Himalayan Hazards" is funded by NERC and the Indian Ministry of Earth Sciences and involves UK researchers at Edinburgh, Durham, Newcastle, Glasgow, Bristol, and York; and Indian researchers at IIT Kanpur, Doon, OP Jindal Global, Sikkim, NGRI, and NCESS. The project aims to co-produce, with stakeholders, the first quantitative understanding of the dynamic risk associated with landslide mechanisms that generate unstable sediment storage (or "sediment bombs") within mountain systems, the processes that trigger downstream sediment release in hyperconcentrated flows, and the impact that this has on subsequent flood inundation down the river network.

The successful applicant will be expected to quantify sediment flux to rivers from both shallow and deep landslides using remote sensing imagery, automated landslide detection algorithms, and empirical modelling. They will compare the locations and volumes of landslide sediment flux to sediment bombs mapped within the river network. They will be expected to use machine learning classification of fluvial systems to generate a time-series of sediment erosion and deposition from optical satellite imagery. These data will be an essential component of the wider project which aims to explore how landslide-derived sediment and sediment bomb accumulation and release modifies flood inundation and therefore dynamic risk for the Alaknanda catchment. The successful applicant will work closely with Dr. David Milledge at Newcastle University on landslide sediment flux quantification. They will also be expected to participate in wider team meetings and workshops which will be held both in the UK and in India.

The Role

A Postdoctoral Research Associate position is available to pursue experimental research in the field of atomic and laser physics within the Durham Quantum Light and Matter group. The position is associated with a project funded by the EURAMET - the metrology component of the European Union Horizon 2020 Programme.

The post holder will be expected to display the initiative and creativity, together with the appropriate skills and knowledge, required to lead and develop experiments to meet the project goals. The post holder will be expected to be familiar with narrowband and tunable scientific lasers, and have experience in atomic physics, quantum optics or laser cooling and trapping. The post holder is expected to be able to work effectively both independently and as part of a small research team. It is expected that the post holder will enhance the international contacts of the group through the presentation of work at international conferences. The post holder will also be expected to aid in the supervision of graduate students within the group as well as contributing to the undergraduate teaching within the Department.

The aim is to explore the use of reconfigurable arrays of trapped ultra-cold atoms in next generation optical atomic clocks. This post is part of the CoCoRiCo consortium, which consists of 4 National Metrology Institutes and 5 university research groups from across Europe. Your role will be to contribute to the development new techniques for trapping and manipulating atoms, as well as studies of systematic errors in tweezer array atomic clocks.

The successful candidate will be required to take a lead role in all aspects of the project, contributing directly to the experiment and working closely with Prof Matthew Jones, collaborators within the CoCoRiCo consortium and outside, as well as graduate students and other members of the research group. You will be expected to undertake an active role in the laboratory activity.

This role will be responsible for conducting ethnographic research into governance across selected research institutes and will co-design and deliver pilot projects aimed at improving governance structures. This post-holder will be an integral member of our research team, working with colleagues from a diverse range of departments and disciplines to deliver this ambitious project.

• Conduct ethnographic research, including interviews and participant observation, across selected university research institutes
• Conduct literature reviews and examine documentation relating to research governance
• Use an action research approach to deliver co-designed research governance interventions
• Use a mixed methods approach to collect and analyse data, including ethnographic research in committees, creating and deploying surveys via Qualtrics and analysing quantitative data using SPSS

The Role and the Department     

A laboratory technician post (Grade 6) is available for 2 years (full time, but with the option for flexible working hours) in the laboratory of Professor Keith Lindsey, Department of Biosciences, Durham University to work on a multidisciplinary industrial biotechnology and bioengineering project on environmental processing and recovery of metals.

The world in 2040 is expected to need 4 times as many critical minerals/metals for clean energy technologies as it does today. To achieve this goal, it is clear that environmental processing and recovery of minerals and metals will play a critical strategic role not only in sustainable resource management but also in waste reduction, pollution prevention, and the transition towards a more circular and environmentally conscious economy. This project unites specialists from across the UK who possess knowledge in essential technologies related to bio-extraction and bio-recovery of metals. We will collaborate to establish an open knowledge Hub aimed at enhancing ongoing projects of engineered organisms at various technology readiness levels that tackle important environmental issues associated with mineral extraction, urban mining, industrial waste, and legacy nuclear waste. The Engineering Biology Hub aims to provide a powerful suite of engineering biology tools and approaches that represent sustainable and efficient solutions to address many of the environmental challenges concerning metal waste and metal-scarcity.

The technician will support this project through the functional characterization of bacterially biorecovered copper nanoparticles (CuNPs). Bio-synthesised CuNPs represent a potential application of biorecovery, as part of a circular economy approach to reduce the need for newly extracted copper and chemical processes for NP synthesis. We will 1) test the ability of biosynthesised CuNPs (using Shewanella oneidensis) to replicate the effects of chemically synthesised CuNPs on plant root growth (a bioassay for CuNP functionality), and 2) use CuNPs from engineered S. oneidensis, optimised for NP production. This £12 M project, funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, links with a second large project with the water industry, to develop methodologies to prevent tree root ingress into built structures, and the successful candidate will have the opportunity to work with team members both within Durham and also in other participating UK Universities.

This is an exciting time to join the Faculty of Arts & Humanities Research Team as we launch and develop the new 'Transformative Humanities' framework for the Faculty. Research lies at the centre of Arts and Humanities at Durham, from our research-led teaching to our individual and collaborative research. Our research environment is lively, cross-disciplinary and articulated through a rich array of activities, from seminars and conferences to performances and public events.

The successful applicant will be a key member of a high performing team, which supports the administration of the research environment across the Faculty. The post holder will work closely with the Senior Research Administrators and the Deputy Executive Dean for Research. They will also work with colleagues in our seven departments and other University teams including Research Innovations Service, Marketing and Communications, and Finance and Procurement. The team works in a hybrid manner and have an office on the World Heritage Site Durham.

Responsibilities will include: day-to-day diary management for the Deputy Executive Dean (Research); acting as first point of contact for the team inbox; monitoring and supporting work undertaken by the Faculty Filmmaker in Residence; managing research processes including research leave and internal funding competitions; website and SharePoint page maintenance; organising and supporting Faculty, departmental and research centre events; organising and minuting Faculty committee meetings; contributing to process improvement projects.

The successful candidate must be able to form excellent working relationships with key stakeholders, work independently and act effectively on their own initiative

The Role and Department

The Research Operations Team is part of Research and Innovation Services (RIS) and provides comprehensive support to academic and PSS colleagues across the lifecycle of a research project. The team comprises pre- and post-award services, consultancy support, and systems implementation and development. Support includes tailored financial and contractual advice and management to all researchers at Durham, from planning, costing, and pricing the initial proposal to ensuring that contracts and agreements are negotiated effectively and efficiently to ensuring robust financial management and compliance of awarded projects. Research Operations works alongside the various teams which make up the Research & Innovation Services and in partnership with Professional Support colleagues across the University to help facilitate research-related planning, reporting and development and to meet the needs of both the individual researcher and the wider institution.

As a Research Grants and Contracts Manager (RGCM) you will play a key role in supporting and developing externally funded research grant activity by providing high quality support and advice to academic staff in the preparation, submission and contractual negotiation of research grants and awards. You will join an enthusiastic and supportive team of RGCMs based in the central office but will also be expected to spend time in the academic departments you support to provide a key link role between the academic community and RIS.

The RGCM will be first point of contact for an academic wishing to apply for external research funding and will provide support and expert advice in a number of key activities including: identifying and disseminating funding opportunities, delivering training and information events, lay reviewing applications, project managing the submission process of the bid including responsibility for budget development and seeking internal approvals. Once awarded, and working closely with post-award colleagues, you will provide support to ensure timely acceptance of the award including contract negotiation and ensuring all ethical and due diligence checks are complete. It is essential that the RGCM is highly organised, pays close attention to detail, and has a pro-active approach to problem-solving. The capability to prioritise and manage a busy and varied workload is crucial. The ability to work across a number of concurrent projects at different stages of development is essential. A confident communicator, you will form close working relationships with the other members of the Operations Team, Research Development Team, Faculty Officials, Heads of Department, Directors of Research, Department Managers and other members of Professional Support Staff.

Dependent on experience, the successful applicant may need to work on campus for the majority of the time for the first three months.
