Job Description

The National University of Singapore invites applications for Research Associate (Computational and Laboratory Biology) in the Department of Biochemistry, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. Specifically, utilising data science approaches involving machine learning and artificial intelligence, A/Prof Gruber’s team focuses on the development and validation of biological ageing clocks for clinical translation and application, as well as in model organisms. Appointments will be made on a two-year contract basis, in the first instance, with the possibility of extension.

Purpose of the post

The successful candidate should have a strong background in both mathematical/machine learning methods and biological laboratory techniques. He or she will also be responsible for data analysis and for developing computational models, algorithms, and tools to analyse and interpret complex biological datasets derived from multi-omics data. The ideal candidate will combine a strong understanding of statistical and machine learning methods, as well as expertise in programming languages such as R and/or Python with training in biology, biochemistry or a related discipline. Industry experience in biotech or pharma would be an advantage.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

The Research Associate will work with other team members to develop and validate biological ageing clock algorithms, and will be accountable to the Principle Investigator (PI). The Research Associate will be able to:

1. Process and extract biological samples (tissue and clinical origin) for -omics analysis;
2. Develop and apply computational models, algorithms, and tools to analyse and interpret large-scale biological datasets (e.g. genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics);
3. Collaborate with experimental biologists to design and analyse experiments, and interpret results;
4. Develop and maintain databases and data pipelines for biological data;
5. Stay up-to-date on new computational methods and tools, and apply them to ongoing research projects;
6. Communicate research findings through publications, presentations, and reports;

The APAC Biological Product Science & Technology (BPS&T) Strategy Leader provides a critical link between the Regional Commercial Units (RCUs) and the Crop Health, Product Science & Technology (CH PS&T) R&D global function. A Research fellow position is available in Dr. Anand Andiappan Laboratory at the Singapore Immunology Network (SIgN). The successful candidate will support the research work that focuses on studying inflammaeing in the context of skin aging in Asian populations.

The candidate will work on primary cells from cohorts and cell culture systems towards understanding functional immune responses in skin immune interactions and recapitulating them in in-vitro and ex-vivo systems. • Drive user research activities such as, usability testing, user interviews, surveys, and translate research findings into meaningful recommendations.
• Guide all aspects of UX including design research, design strategy, user experience, usability testing, interaction/content design and prototyping.
• Work closely with Product Owners to ensure all design work meets user needs and business requirements.
• Create a design-minded environment and build design capabilities amongst project team members.

Job Requirements:

• Degree or Diploma in Human Computer Interactions, Design, Psychology, Computer Science or related fields
• 1-2 years’ experience in user-centered design with hands on experience building visual identities for web and mobile app UI.
• Experience in delivering wireframes, UX flows, mockups, interactive prototypes, design specifications, and final assets.
• Experience with design/wireframing software such as: Figma, Sketch, Adobe suite, or equivalent.
• Strong portfolio showcasing your best design work for web and mobile.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Calendar & Scheduling

• Provide secretarial support to the Director, Clinical Research Unit (CRU)
• Manage appointment scheduling of the Director’s Calendar
• Process claims and payments as necessary
• Provide clerical support
• Assist with travel arrangements for the Director and other team members on CRU work-related trips

Administrative Support

1. Collect, sort and distribute in-coming mails, faxes and circulars

3. Fax, file, photocopy, franking letters and retrieve department records and essential correspondences

2. Meeting Arrangements

1. Co-ordinate CRU departmental meetings including dates of meetings, booking of meeting rooms, gathering of agenda and timely dissemination of minutes to team of CRU, and other meeting attendees where necessary
2. Arrange other ad-hoc meetings and refreshment when required.
3. Schedule meetings for the department and send reminders to parties concern.
4. Preparation of rooms and other logistics (eg. attendances, printing of handouts when necessary) for meetings and events
5. Writes minutes for meetings upon request

3. Data collation

1. Collate and maintain statistics upon request
2. Submit collated training events’ attendances to NHGP HRD after training events when necessary

4. Research-related Administration

1. Provide administrative or logistic support to Manager and CRU team upon request

3. Assist the Director, CRU to prepare presentation slides upon request
4. Assist Manager, CRU to organise research-related events such as Journal Clubs, Research Didactics and Forums
5. Assist Manager, CRU to organize and coordinate training courses and seminars in research and medical ethics
6. Assist Manager, CRU to provide secretariat support to various research initiatives e.g. NHGP Research Attachment, CRU Research Assistance applications
7. Track research outcome

9. Coordinate and collate for research-related course registration for doctors

5. Other administrative matters

1. Tracking of leave (eg. Annual Leave, Medical Leave) & maintain staff movement chart where necessary
2. Raise IT Job Request when necessary
3. Purchase stationery items for departmental use and maintain tidiness of stationery storage
4. Raise Purchase Requisition and e-Payment and other modes of payment when necessary
5. Maintain and back-up a good filing system in the department and shared drive, including maintenance of CRU assets and IT equipment used in the department

Senior position

In addition to the primary and secondary responsibilities, the Senior Executive Assistant is expected to assume leading roles in these duties, e.g. lead in the coordination of events, as well as to train and mentor junior Executive Assistants where necessary.

SECONDARY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Assist in the maintenance of the department’s generic email account
• Assist in the maintenance of the department’s webpage on the intranet
• Perform any other duties as assigned by supervisors and/ or Director, CRU

About the Centre for Research in Health Systems Performance (CRiHSP)

Optimizing the performance of health systems is essential to ensuring the wellbeing and longevity of populations worldwide. Singapore is particularly well placed to lead research in this field as its health system has been consistently ranked as one of the best in the world based in independent evaluation with the Global Burden of Disease data. The new Centre for Research in Health Systems Performance (CRiHSP) aims to advance research in this area within the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine of the National University of Singapore (NUS) as the leading centre for research in health systems in Asia with the following core functions:

1. Research: empirical and methodological research and evidence synthesis on health systems performance with a particular focus on Value Based Healthcare.
2. Health policy intelligence: health policy impact analysis aimed at policy makers, service providers, researchers, and the wider public.
3. Capacity building: formal postgraduate programme (from certificates to PhD), fellowships, mentoring, on-the- job and ad hoc training
4. Contributing to improving NUHS performance: expert advice on the development, implementation, and evaluation of flagship initiatives (including Healthier SG) aimed at making step changes in NUHS performance, and programme evaluation

The multidisciplinary team of researchers in health systems (health services and policy researchers, data scientists, social scientists, and others), and administrators working in CRiHSP will provide an exciting and dynamic place in which people of diverse backgrounds collaborate towards the common goal of achieving excellence in Health Systems Research. The team will further benefit from a significant expansion in related fields and collaborations with the Department of family Medicine at the National University Health System (NUHS), the new Centre for Sustainable Medicine (CoSM) and the Centre for Behavioural and Implementation Sciences Interventions (BISI) at the School of Medicine and the Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Research Associate will have the following duties:

• Contribution to the management of research activities including grant and IRB/DSRB applications, budgeting, planning and monitoring project timelines and generally support project management and coordination and liasing with internal and external stakeholders
• Conduct literature reviews, including collation and synthesis of the literature
• Support the design and interpretation of quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews and focus groups and collected data
• Contribute to and lead (where appropriate) protocol, manuscript and report timely writing, editing and submission.
• Present work for feedback and dissemination at workshops or conferences locally and/or internationally

The post holder will be expected to be flexible in their role as the CRiHSP´s capacity evolves.

NUS offers highly competitive remuneration packages.
