We are seeking applicants for a full-time postdoctoral research fellow position in non-Hermitian physics (ONLY theory and simulation). The successful candidate will apply quantum mechanics and computational simulations to study the physical properties of non-Hermitian system and their nonequilibrium behaviour, as well as to explore potential device applications. We are recruiting an organised, hard-working individual to join our friendly and busy team to help in the delivery of a wide range of research projects and commercial trials in the areas of ecology, pests and disease in horticulture.

As a Research Assistant, your key duties include:

• Field work, such as preparing trial materials and marking out trials; applying treatments (spraying); monitoring crop husbandry; collating experimental data (plant, disease, pests); accurate record keeping; biocontrol, pollinator and wildflower identification.
• Laboratory work, such as laboratory maintenance; molecular biology techniques (DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, qPCR); microscopy; and culturing microbial strains in vitro, invertebrate identification, maintaining plant cultures.
• Conduct drone- and ground-based phenotyping in both commercial and academic projects.
• Data entry, quality checks and administration.

You will be joining NIAB’s Pest & Pathogen Ecology Department, which aims to understand the ecology of pests, pathogens, host plants and natural enemies at community, whole organism and molecular levels to develop more effective and sustainable management of horticultural crops.

We are seeking a highly motivated research assistant with a strong mathematical background who is interested to explore new research directions in neuro-symbolic methods, specifically on the interplay between deep learning and symbolic reasoning. The successful candidate can expect to help with the implementation of algebraic machine reasoning frameworks and will work closely with other team members.

The goal of this project is to develop a general neuro-symbolic reasoning framework for solving various reasoning tasks. The symbolic reasoning part of this framework shall be based on algebraic machine reasoning, a new reasoning paradigm built upon commutative algebra and computational algebra. The non-symbolic part of the framework shall primarily be based on deep learning, and could include vision models, language models, and multi-modal models.

Qualification & Experience:

• Bachelor's in computer science.
• Strong programming experience and must be open to learning new things.
• Strong mathematical background, and is excited by the possibility of applying algebraic methods (e.g. in computational algebra) to problems in machine reasoning.
