What is the Role?

We have several apprenticeship opportunities across our Distribution business, which include Fitter, Jointer, Linesperson and Multi Craft positions. These are field based roles, which means you will be required to travel and work outside in all weathers at all times of day and night as you will be an integral part of the team who ensure electricity supplies are maintained.

The Linesperson is part of a highly skilled team that works at height on the overhead network. You will use your newly acquired knowledge and practical skills to build and maintain the overhead network as well as responding to supply emergencies, ensuring continuity of supply to our customers. You will learn how to problem solve, identify faults and carry out necessary corrective actions to restore supplies.

The Jointer carries out work on our underground electricity network, this could be damage or fault to the cable or planed work such as supply upgrades or laying the cable to a new house.

The Fitter has an exciting and extremely varied role, which may include inspecting and maintaining the low voltage electricity network in your local street or making a repair to an extra high voltage substation which could be providing the supply to a whole town. You will be gaining invaluable mechanical reasoning and problem solving skills and using your hand skills to practically restore the Network.

The Multi Skilled (Scotland only) is completed over a 4 year programme and combined both the Jointer and Lines role in our more remote locations.

The programme can take 3 to 4 years depending on your programme and is centred on work-based learning, training linked directly to the job and academic study at College. By the end of the programme you'll have gained valuable on-the job experience, learned new skills and gained an industry recognised qualification, enabling you to have the opportunity to build a rewarding and successful career in the energy sector and contributing to the delivery of NETZERO.

Our apprentices attend college and our internal training school on a block release arrangement. This can be for several weeks at a time, and you should be prepared to live away from home for short periods. During this time you will be fully support and travel and accommodation will be organised on your behalf.

What do I need?

What is the Role?

Our Trainee Engineer programme lasts for three years and combines academic study with work-based experience. Working within our Distribution business, you'll have the opportunity to study towards a HNC in Electrical Engineering as well as gaining an APM in Project Management qualification.

The Distribution Trainee Engineer programme is designed to build the foundation blocks of your electrical engineering career within the Distribution business, providing you with great opportunities to be exposed to engineering excellence across our business whilst developing your academic, theoretical, and practical skills. This will provide you with an excellent opportunity to become the Power Engineer of the future. You can work towards becoming a Low Voltage Switcher and a High Voltage Switcher, making the Network safe to work on and maintaining Network integrity and resilience whilst ensuring safe and reliable supply of electricity to our customers. This combined with you newly developed project management skills will enable you to become more contribute towards the daily operation, repair and design of the Network whilst supporting the drive towards a Distribution NetZero.

You are provided additional support, training and guidance whilst on your learning journey to ensure you can make a fantastic start to your engineering career within SSEN. Here at SSEN we recognise the importance of continuous professional development and celebrating engineering excellence as an SSEN engineering trainee you will have access to our Engineering Professional Development Forum to assist you in further progressing your Engineering skills.

On completion of your programme you will be qualified to work as an Engineer in the field using your qualifications and authorisations to maintain the continuity of Supply of supply to our customers.

What do I need?
