We are a strong revenue generating and growing business, looking for someone with experience in affordable housing, that can underwrite investment opportunities in low income housing tax credit funds.

As a portfolio manager in BMO’s Community Capital Solutions group, you will be joining a diverse and experienced team to underwrite and manage investments in private equity funds, affordable housing funds and non-profit organizations in support of BMO Harris Bank’s Community Reinvestment Act (CRA) objectives.  We are an active investor in Small Business Investment Company (SBIC) funds, Low Income Housing Tax Credit (LIHTC) funds, and Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs). These social impact investments support BMO’s Purpose: Boldly Grow the Good in Business and Life.

This role requires a strong credit/investment and accounting background with experience in affordable housing and low income housing tax credit (LIHTC) investing preferred. 

The portfolio manager (PM) will regularly interact with external third-party investment fund managers, syndicators and non-profit organizations.   The PM will also work with internal BMO groups including Sponsor Finance, Commercial Real Estate, Sponsor Fund Lending, CRA Governance, Tax, Accounting and Risk Management. 

•    Analyze and review financial and operating information relating to third party private equity fund investments, low income housing tax credit investments, and Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) investments. 
•    Complete due diligence on new investment opportunities.
•    Conducting risk analysis of proposed investments.
•    Summarize the investment thesis utilizing a prescribed memorandum format for presentation to an internal Investment Committee.
•    Complete Subscription Agreements and coordinate closings.
•    Prepare performance reports for internal presentations to members of the internal Investment Committee, Risk and Executive Management.
•    Verify portfolio data and ensuring accuracy.
•    Review and analyze reporting for existing portfolio investments.

Our Business Banking Relationship Managers provide technical expertise for proactive credit analysis, structuring, pricing, and overall transactions assessment within the assigned portfolio / jurisdiction. Provides advisory supports to the team to provide insights on the accuracy and consistency of decisions relative to risk strategies, policies, and appetite. Identifies deficiencies and recommends corrective action plans. Makes credit and pricing decisions and recommendations in accordance with sound credit-granting principles in compliance with Bank policies and procedures.

• Identifies prospective customers, and/or refers customers with Personal Banking and/or more complex needs to appropriate personnel.
• Breaks down strategic problems, and analyses data and information to provide insights and recommendations.
• Monitors and tracks performance, and addresses any issues.
• Designs and produces regular and ad-hoc reports, and dashboards.
• Coordinates the management of databases; ensures alignment and integration of data in adherence with data governance standards.
• Provides advice and support with a focus on unique and complex credit transactions; provides day-to-day technical support for team members.
• Independently examines credit transactions and related reporting (e.g. exception reports) for adherence to transactional policies and procedures.
• Develops risk profiles, credit structuring of lending proposals, and completes credit investigations.
• Examines individual transactions for the designated portfolio and aggregates portfolio information to monitor, analyze, and report on the quality of credit activities and risk-related decisions.

• Adheres to business banking lending processes, policies, procedures, legal, regulatory, audit, and ethical requirements.
• Maintains the confidentiality of customer and Bank information in compliance with Bank policies and procedures.
• Identifies risks and takes appropriate actions, including all documentation and other regulatory requirements to maintain operational integrity.

  Qualifications:

• Typically between 4 - 6 years of relevant experience and post-secondary degree in related field of study or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Successful completion of CMS Compass Program or equivalent knowledge and experience – required.
• Strong knowledge of business banking products, lending processes and loan documentation, and supporting policies, procedures, and technologies.
• Strong experience with customer sales and service.
• Technical proficiency gained through education and/or business experience.

Please note the base salary range for this specific position in San Mateo, CA is $75,000 - $110,000.
