The UKHSA Data Design & Architecture (DD&A) team is responsible for supporting data architecture and data solutions across the organisation. We are a small team of solution architects, data architects, and data modellers. We also work closely with other parts of the organisation who also are involved in development and maintenance of infrastructure and software, including Programme Teams, Engineering & Enablement, Surveillance Systems, Data Services & Quality, Genomics, Enterprise Architecture and the Development and Operations team. The DD&A team supervises and actively develops solutions and data architecture which meet both our own and wider strategies and design principles/blueprints. There is no on call but the fellow will be expected to carry out 2 regular day time work every 6th weekend. The job involves independent operating lists. You and your role

As a member of the Cross Boundary Team's leadership team, you will be accountable for the application development, coordination and leadership of a large technical team (around 100 resources), creating and maintaining products and services for DWP.

Role Overview:
We are looking for a seasoned Senior Data Engineer with over 5 years of experience to join our Data, Analytics, and Development team. This pivotal role involves not just technical expertise but also significant project lead and team leadership responsibilities. You will be instrumental in driving the effective use of data, shaping data strategies, and leading initiatives that enhance data capabilities across the organization. There is potential for rapid advancement to the Head of Data Engineering position for the right candidate.

Key Responsibilities:

• Project Lead: Lead data engineering projects from inception to completion, managing cross-functional teams and liaising with non-technical stakeholders to ensure project success and alignment with business goals.
• Data Pipeline Development: Design, implement, and manage efficient ETL pipelines and data feeds from various sources, ensuring high data quality and security.
• Database Architecture & Management: Architect and oversee database environments, including staging, warehousing, and lakehouse setups, adhering to best practices.
• Analytics & Best Practices: Apply advanced analytics techniques and promote data standards and best practices across the team and broader organization.
• Continuous Improvement: Drive process improvements and explore new opportunities to enhance data utilization and team performance.

Technical Requirements:

• Proficiency in MS Azure Stack: Extensive experience with Azure data services (e.g., Azure Synapse, Azure Data Warehouse, Azure Data Factory) and on-prem SQL Server solutions. Experience with MS Fabric is a plus.
• Database Management: Strong understanding of database architecture, including experience with T-SQL, Oracle SQL, SparkSQL, DAX, M Language, and Python.
• ETL & API Integration: Demonstrated expertise in designing ETL pipelines and integrating data from various sources using APIs and other methods.

Your new role
As the Senior Audit Specialist, you will influence the practices and procedures of audit firms by offering specialised services to improve their audit quality. This is an exciting role within a growing team, with lots of scope to shape the services/programme provided, liaising directly with audit firms and senior stakeholders internally and externally.
Some of the key responsibilities include:
- Leading and performing the work on one or more existing programmes. These could include methodology reviews, reviewing audit files, organising round tables to help develop the customers' understanding of regulatory requirements.- Presenting to audit firms to provide feedback on the services delivered and share good practice.- Upskilling firms to audit PIEs, supporting the review of elements of their quality control systems and aspects of their compliance- Identifying and developing innovative ways to support audit firms- Working closely with internal and external stakeholders to ensure the programme is operating as envisaged- Developing and managing both internal and external stakeholder relationships to maximise the success of the programme

What you'll need to succeed
To be successful in this position you will:
- Be a Qualified Accountant with extensive experience as an auditor
- Have experience of work in the audit regulatory sector, including audit firm inspection, supervision or quality control work.- Have experience of working at or with smaller audit firms, with a wide variety of audit engagements (various sizes and industries)
- Have experience of developing and implementing new services, operational processes and/or methods- Have excellent communication skills
