The Oxford Centre for Magnetic Resonance Imaging (OCMR) warmly welcomes and supports new members of staff. We are a friendly and approachable department with a strong sense of team working and high standards of care. OCMR forms part of the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine (CVM) within the Radcliffe Department of Medicine at the University of Oxford and specialises in Magnetic Resonance Imaging of the heart, liver and brain. The department has three MRI scanners; two of which are dedicated to research, a third which is used to support a diagnostic clinical cardiac MRI service for NHS patients from within the Oxford University Foundation Trust and surrounding areas. The post holder will report to the OCMR Lead Radiographer and work closely with the radiography team, as well as medical teams, reception staff, and nursing team, to meet the needs of the clinical MRI service. With training and support, the post holder will develop their skills as a senior HCA to assist with day-to-day activities within the department. Based in OCMR, the post holder will be responsible for planning and carrying out straightforward clinical activities; preparing NHS patients for MRI, carrying out magnet safety checks, cannulation and post procedural care. They will work within their given scope of practice and will follow a designated framework to achieve competency in a number of specified clinical skills. On occasions, they may be required to assist research participants undergoing MRI scans. They will complete mandatory courses as set by the University of Oxford as well as by the Oxford University Hospitals Trust (OUH), with whom the post holder will hold an honorary contract. Previous experience of working as a HCA is essential to the post. This post is funding by Thames Valley Cancer Alliance and the post holder would liaise with them regarding the development of a breast pain pathway which is locally feasible in OUH to share ways of re-directing breast pain patients away from 2 week wait clinics onto more appropriate diagnostic pathways.

The post holder would develop and then submit their breast pain pathway for assessment by the Association of Breast Surgery Clinical Practice & Standards Committee as outline on the ABS website under ‘ASPIRE Breast Pain pathways’.

The ABS is very conscious of the stress to capacity caused by large volumes of symptomatic breast referrals to breast units across the UK and is looking to assess the strategies being used by units to address the significant proportion of these which are for patients with breast pain.

The post holder would work on this project in additional to clinical commitments in this busy breast surgery department. An exact timetable, with dedicated time for the project, would be worked out in discussion with the Clinical Lead.



The Breast Unit in Oxford sees approximately 8,000 referrals per year with over 600 newly diagnosed patients with breast cancer. They are treated at the Cancer Centre at the Churchill Hospital, (which is also home to the NHS Breast Screening Programme), and at the Horton Hospital in Banbury.



We have an enthusiastic multidisciplinary team with one stop clinics supported by 6 breast radiologists and 3 breast pathologists, medical and clinical oncologists, cancer genetics, plastic surgery and lymphoedema services.



The fellow will be working under the supervision of 7 consultants (4 are part-time and one is an Associate Specialist). The unit provides a full range of Oncoplastic breast surgery service in collaboration with the plastic surgery team, who provide a free-flap reconstruction service.

The post-holder will be required to keep himself/herself fully up-to-date with their relevant area of practice and to be able to demonstrate this to the satisfaction of the Trust. Professional or Study Leave will be granted at the discretion of the Trust, in line with the prevailing Terms and Conditions of Service, to support appropriate personal development needs. The Trust currently makes a financial contribution in support of these activities up to an agreed limit.











Management

The post-holder will be required to work within the Trust’s management policies and procedures, both statutory and internal, accepting that the resources available to the Trust are finite and that all changes in clinical practice or workload, or developments requiring additional resources must have prior agreement with the Trust. He/she will undertake the administrative duties associated with the care of his/her patients, and the running of his/her clinical work under the direction of the Clinical Director.





Administrative Responsibilities

The post-holder will undertake the administrative duties associated with the clinical duties outlined above. So far as is consistent with the proper discharge of the above duties the post-holder undertakes to deputize from time to time for absent colleagues.



The post holder undertakes, exceptionally, to perform additional duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances.



The post holder undertakes, exceptionally, to be available for irregular commitments outside normally rostered duties as are essential for the continuity of patient care.

Responsibility for the care of adult patients undergoing investigation and treatment of heart rhythm conditions Day-to-day running of EP lab lists (patient consent and preparation, list coordination, discharge planning and administration) Support of ablation and cardiac implantable device lists Autonomous Fellow EP lists in the lab Presentation and discussion of clinical cases at the multi-professional MDT Participation in research, governance and clinical audit within the unit. Arrhythmia Clinic at OUH and occasionally associated hospitals. Involvement in the training and supervision of junior medical staff in the EP lab, including the teaching of medical and nursing students.
