The University of Northampton’s Infrastructure Services Manager has responsibility for managing and supporting the Systems team for the university.
The team comprises of 6 Senior Systems engineers, the teams primary focus is to look after a predominately MS windows environment with a few linux based machines.
The post holder will work with university staff, the Executive, and IT subject matter experts to maintain the Systems and server estate to continually improve the systems and the processes we have in accordance with the university’s aspirations and IT strategy.
We are looking to develop a more service orientated culture within the team and are very interested to hear from any one with a similar ethos for service delivery.
The team works across a wide range of technologies, this will include responsibility for enterprise computing platforms, cloud and IT infrastructure, system availability, patch management and vulnerability remediation, Email, Microsoft 365, OneDrive, Print Load Balancing, Certificate Services, Identity and Access and File Services, effective configuration, system design, compliance, documentation, and service provisioning.
If that wasn’t enough, we would also like you to get involved in university life, talking to the students and teams to further improve the service we offer to the end users. The post involves an occasional on call rota, rotated around the team, with some out of hours working requirements.
A generous holiday entitlement of 25 days per annum plus an additional 5 days after 5 years continuous service, plus bank holidays, plus University closed days.

About You
You will have a relevant IT qualification or be able to demonstrate suitable experience, working within the ITIL framework for service management.
You will have experience in the following:
The ability to manage the team and when required adopt a hands on approach to support the team.
A strong technical background in Servers and Storage Infrastructure management, including experience in various versions of the of the Windows Server operating system and have knowledge of databases such as Microsoft SQL Server and SQL express.
Experience in server provisioning, automation, and monitoring (both physical and virtual)
An extensive Knowledge of Enterprise IT infrastructure.
A good knowledge of backup systems and DR testing.
You will be able to demonstrate at interview that you have experience working as part of a team, while giving exceptional customer service to end users.
Knowledge/experience of project management processes and delivery of project elements.
Experience at undertaking operational activities, such as support, monitoring and trouble shooting incidents.

Qualifications
Essential:
Hold a relevant professional level qualification or Bachelors/ Advanced Degree and provable experience (or equivalent)

The department runs a large IT service operation, with a large operational and capital budget. We are currently progressing a program of works transforming the systems at the university and this is an exciting time to join the team.
