We have the unique opportunity for a Director, Energy Sales & Structuring to join our Corporate Sales & Structuring group. The broad mandate to grow market share in Commodities will require the candidate to utilize knowledge of corporate capital structuring, financing and physical flows to provide innovative and customized solutions to BMO’s broad Corporate and Commercial client base. This role includes direct responsibility of monetizing market knowledge through relationships as well as building and executing structured transactions with clients. This requires a deep understanding of the pricing and mechanics of each energy product; liquidity, regulatory, risk and credit considerations; and anticipating global energy market developments.
The Corporate Sales & Structuring group is a team within BMO Global Markets Client Coverage responsible for originating and executing hedging and financing transactions for BMO’s corporate and commercial clients. Working closely with investment, corporate and commercial banking, the team serves as product experts with a coverage universe including foreign exchange, interest rate and equity derivatives, structured finance, equity linked securities, energy and environmental commodities.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
Client Relationship Management :
- Personally develop reputation for BMO as a commodities leader for a portfolio of new and existing clients
- Build and monetize relationships with clients by identifying market opportunities, pricing and executing live trades across energy commodities
- Business development and acquisition of new derivative clients including leading customized analysis for pitches
- Ensure that all new trade bookings and trade amendments are accurately reflected in trading systems and confirmations, on trading platforms, and conform to regulatory requirements
Transaction Modelling & Financial Analysis :
- Performing quantitative, financial, and legal structuring across energy commodities
- Develop customized hedging and risk management tools to meet client needs, including launching new derivative products
- Generate and manage financial models to analyze trade opportunities across energy products
- Understand all software systems for trading and pricing transactions
- Credit analysis, including CVA/FVA and capital
Collaboration
- Be a strong partner and collaborator with the Energy Sales & Trading teams to share market information and solve complex problems
- Build relationships with product partners across Global Markets to provide/solicit cross-product mandates for new opportunities
- Continuously coaching and mentor Analysts, Associates and Vice Presidents
- Ensure high levels of client satisfaction through strong cross-department coordination with the following groups:
- I&CB and Commercial Bank coverage and Portfolio Management
- Other Trading Products Groups
- Cross-Business Risk and Cross-Business Structuring
- Documentation & Legal
- Market Risk
- Client Onboarding
- Compliance
Qualifications
Knowledge
- Demonstrates advanced knowledge of global energy markets – financial and physical; specific knowledge of Western Canadian markets is considered an asset
- Deep understanding and ability to model financial risks and pricing analytics, particularly with OTC derivatives
- Thorough knowledge of derivative structuring including options
- Relevant experience and passion for working in a direct client facing role, including in-depth understanding of legal governing documents and credit support
- Masters in Mathematical Finance, Engineering, Physics, Applied Mathematics and/or Statistics, or other appropriate quantitative discipline is considered an asset
Skills
- Excellent communication skills (written and verbal) particularly the ability to distill complex product and market nuance to commercial stakeholders as well as internal partners
- Very strong business development skills including ability to network and establish industry relationships across existing and novel commodity products and markets
- Strong skills in quantitative analytics, financial modeling, and credit analysis
- Expertise in financial computer applications including MS Excel, VBA, and Bloomberg. Strong proficiency in other Microsoft Office products.
- Able to exercise independent thought and judgment under limited supervision and to adapt to new tasks with little notice
- Excellent collaborator in a team setting and seasoned mentor of junior staff
- Data science skills or experience in least one modern programming language, e.g. C#, Java, JavaScript, Python is desirable
- Please note the target base salary for this specific position in Calgary is $175,000

The above represents BMO Financial Group’s pay range and type.
Salaries will vary based on factors such as location, skills, experience, education, and qualifications for the role, and may include a commission structure. Salaries for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on number of hours regularly worked. For commission roles, the salary listed above represents BMO Financial Group’s expected target for the first year in this position.
BMO Financial Group’s total compensation package will vary based on the pay type of the position and may include performance-based incentives, discretionary bonuses, as well as other perks and rewards.
