The Integrated Sexual Health and HIV service provides over 20,000 Genitourinary Medicine appointments and 12,000 contraception appointments each year. The service is interlinked with the HIV service provided from Barking Community Hospital, which as a patient cohort of c.950. Many staff within the ISHS and the HIV service work across all service elements.
Pre coronavirus pandemic the service operated from four sites, with Barking Community Hospital as the main hub site operating 6 days per week, a Havering provision at Queen’s Hospital open three days per week and a Redbridge provision at Hainault Health Centre & Loxford Polyclinic open one day per week at each site. This role will be predominantly based at Barking Community Hospital.
We are looking to recruit an experienced, enthusiastic and highly motivated Sexual Health Adviser to join our Integrated Sexual Health & HIV service.

• Provide advice, information, education and counselling to patients diagnosed with a sexually transmitted infection including Chlamydia, Gonorrhoea, Herpes, Syphilis, Hepatitis B & C and HIV, communicating all abnormal (positive/detected) results to the patient following results management standard operating procedures.
• Carry out partner notification, to ensure the attendance and treatment of partners/contacts.
• Provide on-going support and counselling for those with associated concerns e.g. sexual assault, termination of pregnancy, sexual identity, relationship, and psychosexual issues etc.
• Undertake pre/post-test HIV discussion and/or counselling.
• Provide follow up counselling and psychosocial care for HIV antibody positive patients as required.
• To assist the Lead Sexual Health adviser in the management and development sexual health advising service.
We provide care for the residents of three diverse London boroughs. Most of our 7,800 permanent staff live in Barking and Dagenham, Havering and Redbridge and the majority are from black, Asian and minority ethnic groups. We also provide healthcare services to people in south west Essex, and specialist neurosciences services to the whole of the county.
Our services include all the major specialties of large acute hospitals and we operate from two main sites - King George Hospital in Goodmayes and Queen’s Hospital in Romford. We have two of the busiest emergency departments in London – more than 300,000 people visited our A&Es in 2023. We also provide outpatient services at Brentwood Community Hospital, Barking Community Hospital, Loxford Polyclinic, and Harold Wood Polyclinic.
We’re pleased to be leading the way inreducing the time our patientswait to get the treatment they need. The Elective Surgical Hub at King George Hospital is one of eight to beaccredited as part of a national scheme; the Care Quality Commission has raised the ratings for urgent and emergency care at Queen’s and King George hospitals; and data released by NHS England showed that the Trust was the most improved in 2023 for reducing waits for emergency care.
We are particularly proud of our regional Neurosciences Centre; Radiotherapy Centre; Hyper Acute Stroke Unit; and dedicated breast care service at King George Hospital. We’re also part of theNorth East London Cancer Alliance.
