What you’ll be doing

As our Education Support assistant, you are an integral part of our education team and will support us to carry out a smooth delivery of our field courses and environmental activities.

This will involve preparing fieldwork equipment and classrooms for learners of all abilities, ensuring areas are clean and safe for use. As well as organise lesson and health and safety resources for our learning groups.

You may be required to accompany teaching staff on field trips, assist students with their fieldwork, help run environmental or problem-solving games and aid teaching staff in the collection of class data.

You will be flexible to our ever-changing learning environment and be happy to assist where required to ensure our centre always runs efficiently. An adaptable approach to your working hours is required as they can change each week depending on the operational needs of the centre.

Where you’ll be based

Our Dale Fort centre is set in a spectacular location high on the cliffs within the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, giving superb views over the sea.

Originally built in 1856 to defend the Milford Haven waterway against invasion, it has been a field centre since 1948. The centre has 4 well equipped classrooms, including one wet lab, a library, games room, sitting room and bar.

Our centre is ideally located for coastal studies and for accessing Skomer Island with its renowned resident sea bird populations, including puffins, guillemots and razorbills.

Rocky shore, salt marsh, grassland and woodland are a short walk from the centre and a wide variety of teaching sites are within 30 minutes’ drive – these include rural and urban settlements, coastal landscapes, and tourist honeypot areas.

As our Centre Manager you will have a key operational and leadership role within our charity. Field Studies Council Castle Head is located in south Cumbria between the coast of Morecambe Bay and the Lake District National Park. The centre is set in 30 acres of grounds with a diversity of habitats including woodland, grassland and freshwater.

With over 150 beds, 5 workrooms, a meeting room to seat up to 120 and a sports hall we cater for most group needs and deliver a wide range of programmes in field studies and adventurous activities.

Who we’re looking for

You will have developed strong business management skills from your previous work experience and be confident to deliver the day-to-day operational functions of a busy learning environment.

Previous experience working in a similar centre environment within the leisure, hospitality or education sectors is advantageous.

In addition, you will have:

Juniper Hall has two accommodation blocks and can accommodate a maximum of 130 guests.

This allows our visitors to study numerous subject matters including, grassland and woodland studies, urban and rural regeneration studies, fluvial studies, freshwater ecology, and coastal management.

As a Chef you’re a key part of our Hospitality and Catering team! You’ll be the supporting the Lead Cook and play an important role in delivering catering service to resident groups that visit us at our Field Studies Centre.

• You’ll do some hands-on cooking, kitchen management and deputising for the Lead Cook as needed, as well as assisting with the supervision of the catering team.
• This is an active role and you’ll need to be happy to be able to carry out all of the duties associated with kitchen work.
• We usually operate fixed mealtimes with one or two sittings, using set menus with two or three food choices.
• Split shifts are common with a breakfast shift typically 7-11am, and dinner shift from 3pm-7.30pm at the latest.

Field Studies Council Slapton is located within the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty close to Field Sites in Dartmoor National Park. We maintain two residential centres (Slapton Ley and Start Bay) in the coastal village of Slapton, as well as Slapton Ley National Nature Reserve.

Start Bay is very popular with primary schools and self-catering, providing exclusive use for groups of up to 40 visitors. Whereas Slapton Ley is very popular with larger GCSE, A Level and University groups and can accommodate up to 120 visitors.

What does a Trainee Tutor opportunity involve?

Our Trainee Tutors are welcomed onto our Graduate Development Programme which is designed to prepare individuals with the skills and attributes to become Outdoor Education Tutors. During the programme each Trainee Tutor will work towards a nationally recognised Level 3 Outdoor Activity Instructor Apprenticeship qualification.

Alongside your studies, you will build experience working with primary and secondary schools to deliver curriculum-linked activities that will increase students’ understanding of nature and the environment. Following successful completion of this programme, more than 80% of our apprentice tutors go on to be employed as permanent tutors with the Field Studies Council!

What you’ll be doing

As one of our Hospitality & Catering Assistants your duties will be varied, our centre is always busy, so we need team members that are happy to help wherever required.

You will be helping our housekeeping operations, with tasks such as cleaning and laundry. In addition to assisting our catering team with setting up the dining room for breakfast, lunch, and dinner service.

Other duties can include working in the kitchen assisting with food preparation and serving food to our visitors.

Where you’ll be based

Located next to Box Hill in Surrey, the Field Studies Council Juniper Hall centre has beautiful scenery and countryside surroundings yet is very easy to reach by car or public transport.

Juniper Hall has two accommodation blocks and can accommodate a maximum of 130 guests.

We are fortunate that our learning location has a variety of outdoor field sites in close proximity. This allows our visitors to study numerous subject matters including, grassland and woodland studies, urban and rural regeneration studies, fluvial studies, freshwater ecology, and coastal management.

What you’ll be doing

When you join our team as a General Assistant, each working day will be varied, depending on the needs of the centre. Therefore, you will be adaptable to the changing environment of our learning location and be happy to help where required.

It may mean that you are helping serve food to our guests one day, then cleaning and helping with laundry the next. It would also be great if you could drive, so you could help deliver food and clean supplies to the guests at staying at our Start Bay centre.

This an active role, so if you like to be kept busy and where no two days will be this same, this could be ideal for you!

Where you’ll be based

Field Studies Council Slapton is located within the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty close to Field Sites in Dartmoor National Park. We maintain two residential centres (Slapton Ley and Start Bay) in the coastal village of Slapton, as well as Slapton Ley National Nature Reserve.

Start Bay is very popular with primary schools and self-catering, providing exclusive use for groups of up to 40 visitors. Whereas Slapton Ley is very popular with larger GCSE, A Level and University groups and can accommodate up to 120 visitors.

What you’ll be doing

This role will see you working with primary and secondary schools, colleges, and universities to deliver curriculum-linked activities that will increase students understanding of nature and the environment.

Your day to day will include developing, planning, and delivering courses in outdoor teaching sites to students on science and geography school trips. This will involve leading groups of all abilities in the local environment, ensuring you always have the health and safety of the group in mind.

When you are not working in the field, you will also be happy to contribute to other aspects of working in a busy education centre. This is a very active role, some weeks will be long and tiring, but our tutors find this work very rewarding, and we promise you will too!

Where you’ll be based

Just 30 minutes from Taunton, Field Studies Council Nettlecombe Court is situated in a secluded valley at the eastern edge of Exmoor National Park. The house is a striking example of a Tudor and Georgian country mansion set within its own grounds.

The grounds are made up of heritage parkland, ancient woodland containing many veteran oak trees as well as a Site of Special Scientific Interest because of its lichen communities.

We have excellent access to field study sites on the Somerset coast as well as Exmoor National Park and The Quantocks Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Who we’re looking for

You will have a degree or equivalent in a relevant subject and some previous experience of teaching or tutoring. You will also be confident with producing and preparing various learning resources. A specialism in geography would be desirable, but this is not an essential requirement.

In addition, you will have:
