Investigate operational incidents and report findings.
About You



We're looking for someone with an in-depth understanding of Traincrew agreements. Extensive knowledge of railway geography – routes, infrastructure, maintenance depots and with a strong operational background. Understanding of how to manage train schedules to optimise resource, reduce delays, and ensure the day to day delivery of our services.

We are seeking a highly organised and proactive Train Crew Diagram Manager to join our Strategic Development team at Northern. In this crucial role, you’ll be instrumental in developing and delivering resource plans that ensure efficient and effective train services across the North of England.



As the Train Crew Diagram Manager, you’ll be responsible for the production of all traincrew diagrams for all Northern services, in order to support a robust and economic resource plan. In this role, you’ll also assist with staff consultation of links and rosters, as well as the production of road vehicle transport plans. You will also be involved in the daily review of operational incidents and any rectifications that may be required from a train planning perspective.



Whilst acting as an Interface with the Depot Management teams and Resource Planning Teams, you’ll ensure the efficient completion and implementation of diagrams to agreed timescales. This role will also require you to look at ways to reduce road transport journeys by staff car or taxi to enhance Northern’s performance and create cost efficiencies.

To kick start your career, you’ll join our one year Level 2 Train Conductor Apprenticeship. Within the first three months you’ll undergo a comprehensive training programme led by our world-class Trainers. Train Operations: Coordinating with Train Drivers and other Operational Teams to ensure smooth train operations – Following schedules, monitor signalling systems, and communicate with Control to maintain adherence to timetables.
Passenger Assistance: Assist passengers with boarding and exiting trains, check tickets, providing travel information, and ensure a comfortable and safe journey. You’ll support passenger inquiries, offer assistance to vulnerable passengers, and maintain a welcoming atmosphere on board.
Safety and Security: You’ll enforce safety regulations, adhere to safety critical door procedures, conduct safety inspections, and respond to emergencies or incidents promptly. You’ll be trained in emergency procedures and act as leaders in evacuations or other critical situations.
Fare Collection and Revenue Protection: Collect fares, validate tickets, and ensure proper fare payment from passengers. You’ll also monitor for ticket irregularities and address instances of fare evasion or unauthorised travel.
Communication and Coordination: Maintain communication with Station Dispatch, Train Drivers, Dispatchers, and other crew members to ensure seamless coordination throughout the journey. You’ll provide updates on delays or disruptions and relay important information to passengers.
Record-Keeping: Maintain accurate records of passenger counts, ticket sales, incidents, and other relevant information. These records help track operational performance and provide data for analysis and planning.
Customer Service: Be responsible for delivering exceptional customer service – interact with passengers in a courteous and professional manner, address complaints or concerns, and strive to create a positive and enjoyable travel experience.


You’ll have a genuine interest in people, you might not have customer service experience, but you know what it’s like to receive it. So, you’ll be courteous, be able to demonstrate effective communication, as well as showing empathy and patience towards others. You also be self-disciplined and able to work within rules and regulations. As well as having excellent time management skills, ensuring you turn up for work on time, so your train departs as scheduled. Not forgetting your willingness to learn new skills and gain knowledge consistently throughout your career.



Because this is an apprenticeship, you’ll also need a good level of numeracy and literacy, so ideally you will hold GCSE grade D in Maths and English (or equivalent). Don't worry if you haven’t got any previous qualifications, as part of the apprenticeship, you'll sit a functional skills test to achieve a level 2 in Maths and English before you take the end-point assessments at the end of your apprenticeship.


The role is safety critical, so there are some essential requirements for you to meet:

Currently live within 45 minute car journey from the station you work from.*
Be at least 18 years of age at the time of application
Pass the RIS3452 Train Worker medical assessment, including drugs and alcohol screening.
Not have defective colour vision

Day to day you will be cleaning on board our trains to ensure we continually deliver a hygienic, functioning, and welcoming environment for our customers. You don’t necessarily need cleaning experience, as we will teach you everything you need to know. The initial training is 1-5 days in the classroom (dependent on location) followed by practical and on the job training working with the cleaning team.

We're looking for a self-motivated and analytical traincrew strategy planning analyst to ensure the right amount of crew operate a successful train service across Northern.

You will work closely with the Traincrew Planning Strategy Manager to oversee the strategic deployment of resources and will play a pivotal role in developing Long Term Plan (LTP) traincrew diagram optimisation solutions to ensure efficient deployment across the North of England.



Through use of optimisation software systems including TrainTRACS, you will develop and create diagram options with in-depth analysis to potential changes to crew conditions, amended rolling stock deployment and to improve the resilience of diagrams. You will be required to work with service planning colleagues to communicate and implement these options to necessary timescales.

Key responsibilities:



This is a varied and challenging role, but here is a taste of what your day-to-day activities could include:

Responsible for the management of allocated projects to ensure that proposals are correctly scoped, developed, delivered, and successfully entered into service.
Ensure project requirements and problem statements are clearly articulated & recorded during the early stages of project initiation and are translated during the development phase into a detailed work scopes which adheres to Railway & Industry Standards and Specifications. Support the development of robust project estimates including the creation of project business case and investment submissions.
Work closely with Northern stakeholders to identify and manage dependencies with NTL’s delivery & operational activities and Network Rail’s renewal and enhancement projects. Actively seek opportunities to co-ordinate work activities and deliver efficiencies.
Ensure accurate cost schedules & project programmes are maintained for all projects, and that delivery teams plan and communicate project timelines, highlighting changes to baseline cost & programme. Ensure compliance to robust change control mechanisms, overseeing the assessment of impact against project scope requirements, budget and timeline and communicate to stakeholders as required.
Manage Contract interfaces and lead 4 weekly project progress meetings, design reviews, site meetings and commercial evaluation meetings with consultants and contractors.
Manage project adherence to NTL governance requirements including Programmes, Project Investment process, Safety & Environment SHE VAL & Procurement Governance and Network Rail processes and procedures including Engineering Assurance, funding and safety requirements.
Liaise closely with Northern’s Programme Controls Team to establish project governance requirements. Produce periodic status reports for the allocated station portfolio including schedule, cost, risks and issues, and items for escalating as required.
Ensure project documentation is stored in a secure and orderly manner, using NTL approved storage locations.
Undertake after action reviews and lessons learned exercise of completed activities, to identify and recommend improvements & best practice for future projects and to the wider team.
Develop team processes and management systems to ensure compliant and consistent delivery through the project lifecycle. Undertake checks & audits to monitor team adherence, recommending corrective actions and process improvements.
About you:



You will have project management experience, ideally with a related qualification and membership of a professional body. Proactive, highly motivated and with the capability to form effective working relationships with colleagues and stakeholders across organisational boundaries.



We’re also looking for the following:

Degree level qualifications and/or relevant experience in managing Construction/Property related projects.
Attention to detail, reliable mathematical ability and accuracy in all your work, and good standard of literacy and presentation skills.
It would be useful but not essential to have an understanding of railway geography and organisational structures, particularly Network Rail.

Key responsibilities:



As the Assistant Financial Accountant, your day could include:

Inputting daily banking transactions into SAP.
Reconciling bank accounts daily to ensure everything balances.
Preparing general ledger account reconciliations on a regular basis.
Administering the weekly payment run and working closely with the purchase ledger team.
Handling station cash and card receipt reconciliations.
Maintaining the daily cashflow forecast and updating this as new information becomes available.
Posting cost allocation and accruals at month end.
Assisting with period-end reporting and preparing key reconciliations.

About the Role:



As an Engineering Depot Supervisor - Technical Support, you’ll be at the heart of our Train Care Centre, playing a crucial role in ensuring we meet and exceed our performance targets.
