The role

As a Principal Engineer - Nuclear Process, you'll have a role that's out of the ordinary where you'll lead the provision of technical support to nuclear implicated submarine maintenance activities on Western Europe's largest Naval Base and one of the UK's Nuclear Licensed Sites.

Day-to-day, you'll support the development and operation of new facilities for defuel of decommissioned nuclear submarines, and will provide technical guidance on the safe transfer, storage, treatment and disposal or radioactive liquid effluent from in-service submarines.

• Acting as subject matter expert and leading the provision of advice to the Head of Nuclear Engineering Group, other Principal Engineers and key stakeholders from the wider business on the implementation and maintenance of design documentation
• Managing and developing a team of Engineers with varying levels of seniority/experience
• Leading the delivery of work packages in accordance with the design process (Start-up, Concept, Scheme, Detailed and Implementation phases) in order to maintain and improve capabilities

• Leading engineering analyses including calculations, component structural analysis and system fluid flow analysis

This role is full time, working 35 hours per week and provides hybrid working arrangements with 2 days in the office/onsite and 3 days working from home.

Essential experience of the Principal Engineer

• Knowledge of mechanical engineering principles for the design, operation and maintenance of pressure/pipework systems
• Knowledge of the considerations for safe design, operation and maintenance or nuclear/radiologically implicated systems
• Experience leading a team of engineers in a design or technical support function
• Experience using engineering software packages (e.g. for computer aided design, stress analysis or fluid flow)
• Experience in the design, operation or maintenance of pressure systems in a highly regulated industry
• Experience in the application of, and demonstration of compliance with, legislation, engineering standards and design codes

Main Purpose of role:

The role

As a Senior Naval Architect, you'll have a role that's out of the ordinary. Developing designs through concept and early-stage design as well as supporting the bidding process. This role will provide you with the opportunity to deliver complex structural solutions within an exciting, interesting team environment.

Day-to-day, you'll be responsible for authoring, reviewing, and substantiating marine designs through calculations, simulations, commissioning, and diagnostic test support. You will contribute and lead product development throughout the design lifecycle and provide technical support to our key customers, ensuring efficient and effective delivery of engineering outputs. You will act as Technical Authority and have deep subject knowledge of an aspect of marine engineering.

• Preparation and production of substantiation reports for marine solutions throughout the entire design lifecycle phases (Concept, Basic, Functional, Detail, Manufacturing, Installation and Decommissioning), in line with recognised standards and to the required time, cost and quality requirements.
• Liaising with design teams and other stakeholders throughout the design lifecycle to ensure coordination and functionality of system designs, including supporting design reviews.

Naval Architecture at Babcock
The activities in this area are many and varied, and Babcock's wide range of engineering projects and industrial sites mean you'll never be far from your next challenge.

You might be helping us dock a 16,000 tonne nuclear submarine, assess aircraft carrier flight deck structure for F35 Lightning landing loads, analyse mooring arrangements for Type 31 frigates, design systems to withstand wartime explosive events, or define the stability requirements for surfacing a nuclear submarine through the polar ice cap.

What's certain is that you'll work alongside - and learn from - over 300 of the most respected naval architects and structural engineers in the world.

You'll learn how to analyse and design various aspects of floating vessels and structures, including hull form, arrangement, stability, structures, resistance, propulsion and human factors. In the process, you'll be making a real contribution to the wider business.

Previous graduates have worked on everything from naval ships, in service or decommissioned submarines to small boats, and commercial vessels and platforms. They have helped us develop unmanned surface vessel support solutions and even been involved in next generation submarine pre-concept engineering.

Within Babcock you'll also have opportunities to further the field of Naval Architecture through research, attendance and presenting at industry recognised conferences. We place a strong emphasis on continuous professional development with support throughout your career to help you progress towards Chartered Engineer status and we have close links with both professional and academic institutions within the field.

What you'll need

• A BEng (Hons) degree accredited by RINA/IMarEST is desirable.
• A degree in Naval Architecture is just one route into the programme, we also accept applications from a wide range of STEM based degrees such as Structural Engineering, Material Sciences and Mathematics, to name a few.

About the programme

The maintenance of the Royal Navy's ships and submarines is fundamental to its ability to defend our nation and its interests.

On this programme, based within the Facilities Engineering design team, you will learn how Devonport's facilities and systems directly support the maintenance of these critical assets, along with all the vital electrical infrastructure that supports the ongoing operation of a nuclear dockyard and naval accommodation base.

You will also develop a deep understanding of electrical principles for designing, commissioning, and maintaining electrical systems.

Electrical/Electronic Design Engineering at Babcock:

• As part of the Facilities Engineering Technical Authority for Electrical Systems at Devonport Royal Dockyard, you'll be part of a team that has vast experience in Electrical Control and Instrumentation Systems, HV/LV Electrical Power Distribution Networks and Electrical Building Services.
• In this role, you will provide technical support to the ongoing operation and maintenance of existing electrical infrastructure and also, undertake the design of new systems or modifications to existing systems.
• This opportunity provides technical development, design engineering development and use of state-of-the-art CAD tools and electrical design software packages (such as ETAP, Amtech, Dialux/Relux and others).

As a Senior Naval Architect, you'll have a role that's out of the ordinary where you'll join a team who are responsible for ensuring the waterfront facilities and assets can meet the operational demands of a modern Navy.

The role
As a Marine Structures Design Engineer, you'll have a role that's out of the ordinary. This is a highly prestigious position within our complex shipbuilding programme, developing designs through concept and early-stage design as well as supporting the bidding process. This role will provide you with the opportunity to deliver complex structural solutions within an exciting, interesting team environment. Each week will provide you with new challenges that will test your skills and knowledge.

Day-to-day, you'll be responsible for is responsible for preparing, developing and substantiating marine and structural designs through calculations, simulations, commissioning and diagnostic test support. You will contribute to product development throughout the design lifecycle and provide technical support, ensuring efficient and effective delivery of engineering outputs.

Primary deliverables:

• Substantiation reports/designs for installation solutions;
• Preparation and production of substantiation reports for solutions throughout the entire design lifecycle in line with recognised standards and to the required time, cost and quality requirements.
• Liaising with design teams and other stakeholders throughout the design lifecycle to ensure coordination and functionality of system designs, including supporting design reviews.
• Develop and support innovative design solutions.
• Provide solutions to manufacturing and installation issues by assisting in the resolution of technical and production queries.
• Produce technical reports and other documentation.

• Proven structural design experience from a highly regulated industry

Day to day, you'll play a vital role by supplying specialist knowledge, support and advice as necessary to enable the Plant / Project Mangers comply with statutory legislation and requirements:

• Provide design advice and support for the defuel facilities.
• Support the development and maintenance of requirements for the defuel facilities.
