Based in the West of Edinburgh, The Royal High School is one of the oldest schools in Scotland. It has a strong sense of history, but prides itself on being very much a school of the 21st Century. It is a non-denominational, 6-year comprehensive, with pupils drawn from 4 catchment primary schools: Blackhall, Clermiston, Cramond and Davidson’s Mains. A significant number of placing requests are received each session. Year groups are capped at 220 and the school roll sits around 1260.

The Senior Leadership Team (SLT) comprises the Rector, four Depute Rectors and the Business Manager.

The current teaching staff complement is 88 FTE with 20 FTE staff other than teachers, including a team of Pupil Support Assistants, who support the integration of pupils. There is an integrated Additional Support for Learning Team combining the former Guidance and Support for Learning teams. In line with the Authority’s integration policies, the school caters for a wide variety of physical, sensory and learning needs. This has been highly successful and forms a key element of our social inclusion strategy.

The school was refurbished in 2004 and enjoys a high standard of accommodation, although social areas are limited and teaching space has to be rigorously timetabled. The facilities are used extensively outside of normal school hours by the school, the RHS Club and the community; the school is designated a Community Sports Hub and the PE facilities were refurbished in 2015 to support this. There is an excellent extra-curricular programme, with partner clubs and staff offering a range of opportunities in which young people can participate. ICT facilities are very good and S3-6 pupils all have access to a 1:1 iPad device to support their learning at home and in school.

The school has positive links with parents, local businesses and the local community. The Parent Council and School Fundraising Group play an important role in the life and work of the school. Meetings are well attended and discussions are always lively and informative. The school is also supported by an active Former Pupils’ Club.

The post holder will work as part of the Dental Nurse Team. The Dental Nurse will ensure patients and carers are received in a calm, courteous and reassuring manner and prepares them to undergo treatment. The Dental Nurse will assist the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon in Professional and Technical skills and assists members of the multidisciplinary team in the supervision of the patient until they are fit to leave the department. All members of the Dental Nurse team are expected to take on additional link roles to support the close team. These can include Moving & Handling, Fire or Dementia Link. The alliance work across the project to integrate and coordinate the delivery of all main Mechanical, Electrical, Heating, Ventilation and Air-Conditioning (MEH), cabling and associated support services. This innovative approach will help different contractors work as a single entity to deliver the complex installation of cabling and pipework in the power station's vast network of rooms.

The role

As a Health, Safety and Environment Advisor, you'll have a role that's out of the ordinary. Being part of the MEH Alliance working on Hinkley Point C is a chance to be involved in a major project with national significance. You will play a critical role in ensuring the highest standards of health, safety and environmental (HSE) and your expertise will be crucial in safeguarding both the workforce and the environment, ensuring that best practices are not only met but exceeded.

Day-to-day, you'll ensure Health and Safety Standards are consistently met across the HPC project.

• Champion the HPC Way and its core pillars, promoting a culture of safety.
• Play a key role in the integrated Health & Safety team, providing expert advice.
• Monitor and inspect working practices, including conducting site inspections and reporting trends.
• Build and maintain relationships with Tier 1 contractors and the Principal Contractor.
• Provide specialist advice on HSE topics, ensure compliance with MEH policies, and manage incident response.

This role is full time 37 hours per week, and is based on site at Hinkley Point C, near Bridgwater, Somerset.

Essential experience of the Health, Safety and Environment Advisor

• Significant experience gained within a construction background.
• Excellent communication skills, both written and spoken, to effectively explain HSE procedures and expectations to diverse audiences.
• Experience in the nuclear industry is desirable.

Qualifications for the HSE Advisor

• NEBOSH General Certificate, NEBOSH Construction Certificate, or equivalent.
• Membership in IOSH or a similar professional body is desirable.

The successful candidate must be able to achieve and maintain Standard (BPSS) security clearance for this role.
