ESSENTIAL SKILLS:

Under the direction of the Senior Environmental Analyst the Engineering Technician will assist in: 

• Implementing the Suffolk County Parks Endangered Species Protection Program for the protection of the Piping Plover and Least Tern.  

• Preparation of NYSDEC permit applications (freshwater wetlands, tidal wetlands, Wild Scenic and Recreational Rivers, Protection of Waters, L I Well, SPDES permits) for various environmental projects and activities on County parkland.  

• Conducting Southern Pine Beetle ground truthing, surveying, meetings and collaboration with the NYSDEC, CPBC and other municipalities to suppress the spread of this tree killing beetle in County Parks. 

• Reviewing research proposals submitted by environmental agencies, professors, students and other scientists to conduct research activities on County parklands. Suggest modifications to proposals if necessary to make acceptable to department and draft the permit. 

• Compiling grant applications to secure funding for various County Parks projects or to address issues on County Parkland.  

• Working with the CPBC on prescribed fire and other land and management techniques to improve public safety and the ecological integrity of County Parklands.  

• Submitting monthly Long Island Pumpage reports and preparing responses to NYSDEC correspondence. 

• Working with Long Island Plant Management group dedicated to preventing the spread of invasive plant species, allowing Parks to be more proactive in invasive species management. 

• Working with the Peconic Estuary Program staff on ecological projects to enhance the estuary’s habitats, including planning and implementation of fish passage projects. 

• Preparation of Parks information for the County’s annual report under the MS4 storm water permit.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

An employee in this class performs entry-level work in conducting investigations and collecting child support payments from individuals legally responsible for the support of dependents.  Trainees receive on-the-job training while performing duties of a limited but increasingly responsible nature. The incumbent assists in performing investigations to locate individuals so that support and paternity orders may be established and payments may be obtained through voluntary agreements or court orders.  The incumbent works closely with higher-level Child Support Specialists, and work is subject to review through consultation and examination of work performed.  Does related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under direct supervision, an employee in this class performs entry-level professional social work for individuals and families.  Work differs from that of a Caseworker Trainee in that a position in this class requires proficiency in both the Spanish and English languages.  Trainees receive continuous on-the-job training while performing duties of a limited professional nature.  The incumbent works closely with professional supervisors, and all work is subject to review through frequent consultation and examination of work performed.  Does related work as required.

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

• Attends on-the-job or special training sessions and participates in conferences and regular staff meetings;

• Studies and reviews literature and other materials related to casework to systematically acquire essential knowledge of the profession;

Key Elements Of The Role:

An employee in this class performs entry-level work in conducting investigations and collecting child support payments from individuals legally responsible for the support of dependents.  Trainees receive on-the-job training while performing duties of a limited but increasingly responsible nature. The incumbent assists in performing investigations to locate individuals so that support and paternity orders may be established and payments may be obtained through voluntary agreements or court orders. Duties require proficiency in both the Spanish and English languages. The incumbent works closely with higher-level Child Support Specialists, and work is subject to review through consultation and examination of work performed.

· -Vacation Time: During the first year, employees are entitled to 10 Vacation days, earned at the rate of 2.75 per pay period totaling 10 days annually. Employees continue to earn vacation days in accordance with the schedule, reaching a maximum of 30 days per year. Unused vacation time rolls over each year until a maximum of 420 hours.

· Sick Time: Earned at the rate of 1/2 day per pay period totaling 13 days annually. Unused sick time rolls over each year, with no maximum rollover.

· Personal Leave: An employee granted 4 days of personnel leave each year. Employees receive 7.5 hours on their 1st day and will accrue one additional day every quarter. After employee first

anniversary, 28 hours of personal days will be frontloaded at the beginning of each year worked. Unused personal time rolls over into sick each year with no maximum rollover.

· Salary: Step increase every 12 months on July 1 completed year of service in addition to contractual raises through 2024.

· Membership in the New York State Retirement Pension System 5 year vested. In order to retire with Health benefits you need to work 10 continuous years with the county and be 55.

This Role Is A Provisional Appointment 

A provisional appointment, which occurs only in the competitive class, is a temporary appointment to a position for which no eligible list exists or for which an eligible list exists with fewer than three candidates who are willing to accept the position. In order to become permanent, the employee who is provisionally appointed must take the next examination for the position in question. The appointment to the position is then made from among the three highest scoring passing candidates who indicate their willingness to accept the position. Civil Service law does not compel the appointing authority to choose the provisional employee should he or she be one of the three candidates
