About the team

SRUC manages six farms, of over 4400 hectares, to provide research, education and knowledge transfer in dairying, arable, beef, upland/hill sheep systems, pig and poultry farming. This role is based at Oatridge Farm in West Lothian which provides an academic support unit for our Oatridge Campus and wider consultancy and research teams. This campus stands on its own 283-hectare estate, including the working farm, and is within easy reach of the motorway network.

About the opportunity

In this role you will be accountable for the successful operation of Oatridge Farm. You will be an advocate for SRUC farms both internally and externally and will manage relationships between SRUC farms and external agencies and partnerships.

In this role, your duties will include:

• Managing the operational farm staff at Oatridge Farm whilst maintaining on the ground delivery of high-quality animal welfare and timeous crop management.
  
• Managing procurement is in line with SRUC policies and Scottish Government guidelines.
  
• Hosting visiting groups and students.
  
• Using farm-based data to make important management decisions e.g. conception rates as part artificial insemination programmes. This includes physical and financial decision making to ensure resources are available in a timeous manner e.g. feed, fertiliser, fencing materials.
  
• Being actively engaged in physical work along with on-site farm staff and being aware of the challenges and opportunities that staff are experiencing daily.
  
• Responsibility for the upskilling (formal training, informal mentorship) of farm staff.
  
• Updating budgets on a monthly basis.
  
• Responsibility for the Health and safety including welfare of animals and people on the site, this will include articulation of the risk assessments in place, supervision staff and students on site to maintain the highest possible animal health and human safety standards.
  
• Responsibility for providing a high standard of support for ad-hoc teaching and research.

  Minimum qualifications and experience:

  • Educated to at least SCQF Level 8 HND Level in a relevant subject or equivalent experience
    
  • Proven farm management experience and knowledge is essential including the management of people and other resources.
    
  • Able to demonstrate good knowledge or practical experience of the agricultural and farming industry including farm budget management.
    
  • Awareness of Zoonotic potential of handling livestock waste.
    
  • An understanding and awareness of COSHH regulations particularly dust and chemical handling.
    
  • Driving license is essential as travel to remote areas not covered by public transport is a feature of this role
    
  • Farm machinery experience / certification where required e.g. trailer, tractor and forklift certification.
    
  • Experience of using a range of modern farm equipment.
    
  • Effective use of IT, Team Player, Analytical thinking, self-motivated, project management.
    
  • Ability to interrogate data systems to ensure SRUC farms remain compliant, and within fiscal boundaries and principles.

About The Team:

Our Northern faculty operates across 3 campuses (SRUC Aberdeen, Inverness and Cupar). We are working with partners to secure investment in state-of-the-art facilities for teaching, research and consultancy within our Northern faculty. The Department of Rural Land Use is based in Aberdeen and Cupar (Elmwood) and encompasses the management of the whole rural environment, with expertise covering agriculture, conservation, environmental management, golf, food and drink, horticulture, rural business management, and wildlife.

SRUC has a long history of delivering of taught programmes in land management which have always been developed in partnership with industry and have attracted students from across Scotland, the UK, and internationally.

Current global challenges mean that the importance for education, evidence-led research and consultancy has never been greater. SRUC is uniquely placed to support industry and society in meeting these challenges and equipping graduates with enhanced knowledge, skills and practices related to objective setting, use of technology, data handling, communications and business skills, and resource use efficiency.

SRUC has a long record of delivery of education programmes within Horticulture and Landscape, based at the Elmwood Campus, Cupar Fife. Programmes have always been developed in partnership with industry and have attracted students from across Scotland, the UK, and internationally. Current programmes include SCQF Level 5 Modern Apprenticeships, SCQF Level 4 and Level 5 National Certificates and the HNC (SCQF Level 7) in Horticulture as well as delivery of School programmes at SCQF level 4 and 5. In the future we will be looking to run the HND Horticulture (SCQF Level 8) programme at Elmwood Campus.

The Opportunity:

We are looking for a Horticulture Lecturer who can integrate with colleagues across our existing teaching and research strengths. The successful candidate will have an awareness of the horticultural industry as a whole and have knowledge of sustainable horticultural practices and be willing to contribute to the enhancement of the departments sustainability. Ideally, the successful applicant will be experienced in FE and/or HE delivery and have previous experience of delivering horticulture provision to school pupils. This should be combined with a drive to impact positively on today’s horticulture industry through inspiring young people in schools to embark on a career in horticulture using innovative and exciting curricula.

The successful candidate will be required to teach on our FE horticulture portfolio which includes delivery on our school’s programme at level 4. Within this programme across SRUC, there is an emphasis on preparing students for careers and fostering the essential skills needed by industry.

The successful applicant will also ideally have a track record of research and/or industry experience in a related field. SRUC is seeking a closer alignment of its research and education activities, and it is hoped that the successful applicant will contribute to world class research carried out within SRUC. You will grasp the opportunity to foster cross-disciplinary collaborations and ambitions that will build on current strengths within the department, and across the institution.

Minimum Qualifications:

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a student support tutor to join the friendly student support team at SRUC Aberdeen.

The successful post-holder will provide high quality proactive, and when required, reactive student support services – to taught / research students and prospective students, as applicable. They will provide and have experience in pastoral support in the HE/FE sector.

The Opportunity

The main purpose of this role is:

1. To help ensure the smooth running of the SRUC website, thereby supporting the Communications team to drive key audiences, including prospective students, commercial partners and stakeholders, to the SRUC site and our associated microsites;
   
2. To ensure that those audiences are able to find the information that they need; and
   
3. To ensure that the SRUC website and the information/content within it is accurate and up to date.
   

In this role you will:

• carry out administrative duties in relation to the website, including ensuring links are kept up to date and updating information as directed by the Website Officer;
  
• monitor the website inbox and respond to or re-direct enquiries accordingly
  
• raise purchase orders relating to website subscriptions and upgrades;
  
• work as part of the wider Communications Teams to co-ordinate and support colleagues institution-wide in the delivery of the website and its day-to-day functionality;
  
• assist with email marketing planning and delivery;
  
• plan and build new website pages;
  
• implement website design changes;
  
• assist with the analysis of website visitor behaviour, preferences, trends, and usage statistics to inform improvements (SEO, accessibility, best practice, user journey, user experience, etc.);

The Opportunity:

We are seeking a highly motivated individual to provide technical support and data handling for the research being conducted at SRUC’s Dairy Research & Innovation Centre in Dumfries. The successful candidate will have relevant technical experience in cattle husbandry, operation of specialist farm recording equipment and farm data handling. Experience of recording and sample collection for scientific research would be beneficial.

The Poultry Evaluation Team deal with all aspects of poultry processing, ensuring that agreed service standards are delivered to a high quality.

The main purpose of the role is to help support a team of Poultry Evaluation Unit (PEU) staff which includes Team Leaders and CEU Operatives. Reporting directly to the Poultry Evaluation Unit Manager.

Provide technical support for students and/or staff within the School of Veterinary Medicine, primarily within the areas of anatomy, pathology and veterinary public health but at times in other areas within the School.

The main purpose of this role is to provide leadership to SRUC’s Veterinary Surveillance Team, and associated activities within SRUC’s School of Veterinary Medicine (SVM).

• Lead on engagements with Scottish Government, including responsibility for the Veterinary Advisory Service (VAS) Contract and other stakeholders.
