The post holder will have principal duties to provide clinical care to Kensington and Chelsea and Westminster residents admitted to Nile Ward. They will be supported by the MDT team that includes a Higher Specialty Trainee (ST- currently two part time STs), 2 Core Trainees (CT 2-3), as well as Occupational therapist, pharmacist and psychologist. The post holder will provide joint leadership with the ward manager, for the performance culture of the ward, ensuring best practice is employed across the ward, and that the Trusts quality and productivity targets are met. They will promote good clinical care for all patients for both their mental health and physical health. A key feature of the Acute Service vision is that in-patient care is delivered by an integrated multi-disciplinary team with a shared sense of ownership for the ward environment as well as the clinical services provided. The post holder will adopt a pragmatic leadership style as a way of promoting this type of ward environment, thus ensuring collaborative working both at a clinical and an operational level. The post holder will be expected to participate in Quality Improvement and service evaluation projects and will be encouraged to undertake any research which may be relevant to either short or long-term service improvement. Together with the Matron and ward manager the post holder will provide overall clinical leadership for the Ward Multidisciplinary team as well as direct clinical assessments and consultations for the Team, including the following: Medical input, consultation and clinical leadership to the ward, and overall clinical responsibility for patients admitted to the unit. MAIN RESPONSIBILTITES Collect blood samples by venepuncture from patients on request from clinicians, doctors and nurses, in accordance with the phlebotomy standard operating procedure. Ensure correct care, labelling, recording and maintenance of accurate records for each venepuncture. Have due respect for privacy and dignity Ensure subject is comfortable and relaxed as much as possible, and obtain verbal consent prior to collecting blood samples. If requested, to visit other areas to undertake venepuncture for subjects who are unable to attend the phlebotomy department without delay. Comply at all times with trust relevant data and information governance policy, and respect confidentiality, in particular the confidentiality of electronically stored data, in line with the Data Protection Act. Have a good knowledge and understanding of the purpose of the different blood collection devices, and be able to pass on knowledge to trainees, as required. Be aware and understand the range of blood samples that require special treatment. Accurately create labels using the available IT system and label all samples correctly before calling in the next subject. Reassure patients who are nervous about sampling procedures and apply dressings to wounds created by blood draws. Participate in local initiatives to enhance service delivery and patient care. Maintain accurate records of all samples taken. Track collected specimens by initialling & dating request form. Be able to use Trusts Patient Administration System (PAS) to find subject details when needed, e.g. to confirm identity before taking any blood samples. Assist in delivery of samples to the Pathology Department whenever is necessary to do so. Notify nursing staff, preferably nurse in charge, if there are any concerns for the subjects care. Liaise with members of the administrative team and communicate well with team members. When requested, pack and despatch blood samples correctly for transport to the appropriate laboratories. Check that all consumables are always in sufficient quantity, order and re-stock regularly. Ensure the maintenance of good working relationships and communication at all times with patients, relatives and staff of all disciplines. Participate in discussion with the department manager or senior concerning the repair and renewal of equipment and estate. Supervise and train other clinical staff to ensure competency in venepuncture OTHER DUTIES: Be familiar with and ensure compliance with the trusts Health and Safety policy and Infection Control policies. Maintain a safe working environment for self, all other staff members, patients and their relatives. Keep clinical area clean and free from clutter. Report all adverse incidents via trust Safeguarding reporting system. Pay due care and attention to the implementation of safety measures in relation to the disposal of sharps, bloods and body fluids. Adhere to relevant trust policies including needle-stick injury policy. Work with the pathology team to carry out specialised point of care tests (POCT) when required. Be able to work with the pathology team and assist whenever there are staff shortages. Keep up to date with all mandatory training. Attend regular staff meetings in the Pathology department. To lead in the delivery and presentation of the financial element of the Trusts Annual Plan and to oversee the production of a reliable forecasting process Work closely with the Head of Finance MI, Analysis & Reporting to ensure the financial plan is accurately reflected in budgets. Model the Trust short term (1 year) and long-term financial plans taking account of the effect of cost pressures, service developments and income assumptions including revisions to the tariff and changes to national policy and legislation. MAIN RESPONSIBILTITES: Pathology Services: To collect, log and send samples to the relevant pathology assessment service in accordance with the Pathology standard operating procedures (SOPs) and national guidelines for the for the dispatching of pathology samples. To receive samples from network sites and clinics, log and send them to the relevant provider, returning the labelled Bio-Bottle containers to the originator as required. To safely handle, log and send pathology samples (blood and other body fluid samples, tissue samples and so forth) to the relevant pathology provider. To carefully check the request form and patient samples in accordance with the Request Form and specimen Labelling Policy. To prioritise the workload so that urgent samples are dealt with in a timely manner and to record all urgent requests as required, to follow these up and promptly give results to the requesting clinician. To field and escalate issues raised either via phone, the shared mailbox or physically so that the issue can be resolved to all partys satisfaction. To provide support to colleagues within the department, as needed. Moorfields Lions Eye Bank To scrutinise, with colleagues, and action the daily transplant lists, to ensure the correct tissue is in the correct place in advance of surgery. To source and order tissues as required from multiple tissue providers (NHSBT, MiS, RMLEB, NuVision and Wescott Medical) to maintain relevant stocks locally. To undertake appropriate checks on receipt of tissues and ensure the appropriateness of both the tissue and storage conditions. To ensure, with colleagues, that Tissue usage paperwork if completed for each issued tissue and to chase when there are identified gaps. To review and generate reports as needed for providers, including the Human Tissue Authority (HTA), Infection Control (IPC) and Graft Outcome Clinics (GOC). To provide support to colleagues within the department, as needed. Department of Eye Pathology To receive samples and biopsies from national senders and handle them in accordance with local guidelines. To carefully check the request form and patient samples whilst booking the samples in to the departments computer system,/database. To support the Biomedical Scientists by undertaking duties which they request, such as changing the processing machines, refreshing reagents across various analysers, running IQC and retrieving solvents from the bulk store as needed. Miscellaneous: To support the line managers towards continuously improving the service delivery and efficiency streams.
