Origins Lab

The overarching aim of the lab is to understand the developmental origins of health and disease (DOHaD) and translate it into meaningful clinical insights. We hope to maximize human potential (neurodevelopment) and prevent the development of obesity/cardiometabolic disease at its root, early in life.

Using data collected from multiple longitudinal birth cohorts, we utilize rigorous statistical methods including growth modelling (mixed effects models, various parametric and non-parametric models, etc.), mixture modelling (quantile g-computation, etc.), causal inference, machine learning, and multi-omics analysis.

The National University of Singapore invites applications for research assistant/associates in the Multimodal Neuroimaging in Neuropsychiatric Disorders Laboratory (MNNDL), Centre for Sleep and Cognition, Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. The MNNDL group at NUS studies the human neural bases of cognitive functions and the associated vulnerability patterns in aging and neuropsychiatric disorders using multimodal neuroimaging and psychophysical techniques. We are interested in the large-scale brain structural and functional networks in healthy developing and aging brain and symptoms-related changes in diseases such as neurodegenerative disorders and psychosis. Statistical, computational, and machine learning methods are developed to analyze and fuse multimodal neuroimaging data. By integrating longitudinal behavior, neuroimaging, and genotype data, our long-term goal is to investigate the interactions among brain network dynamics, behavior, diseases, and genotypes to develop non-invasive biomarkers for early detection, differential diagnosis, progression monitoring, and treatment design.

Key attractions are access to a high-performance computing cluster, two 3T Prisma MR scanner and a MR compatible digital EEG system as well as collaboration opportunities with an excellent network of domestic and international scientists and doctors. Purpose of the post

The Research Assistant (RA) will work closely with the Principal Investigator, lab members, and collaborators to ensure successful completion of research projects (including neuroimaging, behavioral, and digital tracking experiments), smooth operation of computing and neuroimaging equipment, and efficient management of neuroimaging database in the lab.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

The research assistant will support the effort in conducting cutting-edge neuroscience and machine learning research and development. He/she has the opportunity to learn state-of-the-art neuroimaging techniques, data collection and analysis, with healthy participants and patients with neuropsychiatric diseases. He/she will be primarily engaged in all neuroimaging and behavioral experiments such as subject recruitment, behavioral testing, digital tracking, image data collection, and data analysis. He/she will also support computing server/storage administration (with support from external vendors), neuroimaging equipment maintenance, and general lab administration like website. He/she will also be able to learn how to conduct fMRI scans with EEG recording, interactions with patients, quality control, behavioural assessments, neuroimage processing using automatic or semi-automatic scripts, and implications in neuroscience and disease. Job Description

The Centre for Quantum Technologies (CQT) at the National University of Singapore (NUS), and the French-Singaporean international laboratory (Majulab), are seeking a talented postdoctoral fellow to conduct theoretical and numerical investigations on Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) physics in quantum systems.

The KPZ equation, introduced in 1986 to describe the growth of rough surfaces, has since become a captivating area of research due to its remarkable universality. The project entails studying three quantum platforms where recent studies have shown signatures of KPZ physics: random quantum circuits, Anderson localization, and exciton-polariton condensate, as detailed in [Nahum et al., PRX 2017; Mu et al., PRL 2024; Fontaine et al., Nature 2023]. All three systems are subject to random fluctuations in their many-body degrees of freedom: (i) in the growth of entanglements in quantum circuits, (ii) in the wavefunction fluctuation of an Anderson localized system, and (iii) in the phase of a driven-dissipative condensate.

Despite being completely different, these systems are strikingly connected by KPZ physics. By following upon this unique cross-platform connection, one has the opportunity to discover new properties in each of these systems that could not have been envisaged otherwise. In this position, the fellow's primary focus will be on the latter two platforms and interact closely with another fellow dedicated to the first platform.

Job Requirements

The candidate should possess a solid academic track record and some prior experience in quantum disordered systems, quantum transport, many-body physics, quantum information, quantum fluids, or cold atoms. Proficiency in numerical simulations is essential.

The appointee will join CQT under the supervision of a group of researchers including Profs., Kwek Leong-Chuan, Hui Khoon Ng, Jiangbin Gong, Gabriel Lemarié, Maxime Richard, and Christian Miniatura. The candidate will actively contribute to all aspects of the group's operation, including co-supervising interns and PhD candidates. The RF will contribute to the development and implementation of statistical analyses within different projects in the field of Medical Statistics and Biostatistics, involving data from large heterogeneous cohorts such as GUSTO and S-PRESTO (more info at https://www.gusto.sg/ and https://www.s-presto.sg/ ). The projects are developed in close collaborations with researchers from A*STAR Institute of Human Development and Potential (IHDP) and NUS, working in different scientific areas, such as metabolomics and neuroscience, contributing to the interdisciplinary environment of the Institute. As such, excellent scientific communication skills are highly desirable. The RF will be asked to perform both routine and advanced statistical analyses, often characterized by a strong computational aspect.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, longitudinal data analysis, graphical models, high-dimensional data analysis and Bayesian statistics. The candidate will work closely with Prof De Iorio, as well as collaborate with other researchers in A*STAR and NUS.

Applicants should hold or be close to submitting a PhD in Statistics or a related field such as Biostatistics, Mathematics or Computer Science, with a documented competence in Statistics and/or Biostatistics.

Knowledge of programming in R and other coding languages commonly used in Statistics such as C++/Python.

Qualifications

The applicant should:

1. Hold a Ph.D., preferably in Statistics/Computer Science
2. Have a strong background and extensive research experience in conducting human trials;
3. Have a good record of international publications in human research;
4. Proficient in the use of computer applications and data analysis software, e.g.MS Office, SPSS;
5. Excellent command of spoken and written English, and have strong interpersonal and communication skills;
6. Work independently and a good team player; and
7. Have an investigative nature and detail-oriented, highly motivated problem-solver.

Key Responsibilities:

• Design, develop, and optimize membranes for hydrogen separation, purification, and production applications.
• Conduct research on new membrane materials (e.g., polymeric, ceramic, composite) and their application in hydrogen fuel cell and electrolysis systems.
• Oversee membrane testing, characterization (SEM, XRD, FTIR, etc.), and performance evaluations.
• Collaborate with R&D teams to scale up membrane technologies from lab to pilot and industrial scale.
• Provide technical insights into membrane degradation, durability, and efficiency improvements.
• Support cross-functional teams in the integration of membranes into hydrogen production units.
• Stay updated on the latest developments and innovations in membrane technology and hydrogen production.

Qualifications

• Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering, Material Science, or related fields with a focus on membrane technology.
• Proven experience (3+ years) in membrane design and development, specifically for gas separation or hydrogen-related applications.
• Strong understanding of hydrogen production technologies such as water electrolysis, methane reforming, or fuel cells.
