Project Overview

We are seeking one or more graduate research interns (ideally full time students currently pursuing a PhD degree) in computer science to join the “Towards an Immersive Workplace” project. This project is part of Task “T1” of a five-year, ambitious research program on "Mens, Manus and Machina—How AI Empowers People, Institutions and Cities in Singapore (M3S)."

Successful applicants for this position will have the opportunity to work on cutting-edge research that builds new capabilities for AI-enhanced human-robot interaction, with a special focus on supporting efficient and collaborative spatial/3D sensing and comprehension in industrial environments, such as airport tarmacs and logistics warehouses. The end goal is to build exciting new capabilities that allow robots and humans to work together, interactively and in close proximity, with the spatial sensing helping agents embedded in robots understand and situate human instructions, queries and commands, issued naturally in untethered, field settings.

The research intern, working part-time (10-16 hours per week) will be specifically involved in the development of new, energy-efficient and reliable spatial sensing technologies, such as LIDAR (3D). The goal is to allow teams of humans and robots, working in close proximity in a common physical environment, to achieve appropriate spatial awareness. The research will focus on addressing challenges such as (i) interference between multiple LIDAR sensors, when operating in a shared physical environment, (ii) optimized sharing of LIDAR-sensed point cloud data among collaborating peers, and (iii) resource-efficient augmentation of LIDAR sensing via use of additional cheaper sensors (e.g., RGB and thermal cameras). These techqniues will progressively be combined with additional research, being developed in complementary efforts within the overall T1 project, that tackles topics such as non-obtrusive human attention capture and efficient multi-modal DNN comprehension for human instructions, to support more accurate understanding of human instructions and preferences, whether explicit or implicit.

The T1 team is led by distinguished scholars, including Profs. Sanjay Sarma, Daniela Rus and Jinhua Zhang from MIT; and Prof. Archan Misra from Singapore Management University. The proposed research described above will be spearheaded by Prof. Misra.

The members of CIL’s Ocean Law & Policy team currently conduct research on a broad range of cutting-edge ocean law and policy issues of interest to Singapore, the region and the international community, including maritime security, marine environment, climate change and law of the sea, biodiversity beyond national jurisdiction, maritime disputes, technology and the law of the sea, deep seabed mining, fisheries and submarine cables. CIL researchers go on to a variety of positions in government, academia and international organisations.

CIL invites applications for a Research Fellow position from candidates with a PhD related to public international law, law of the sea or maritime law and a demonstrable interest in oceans law and policy. This position will be on a 2-year contract. Candidates with a particular interest in Southeast Asia and its regional institutions and/or working experience in an academic research institute, international organization or government agency are strongly encouraged to apply.

The Research Fellow Programme at CIL provides an exciting opportunity to engage with and learn from other oceans law and policy scholars and experts in the CIL Oceans Law and Policy Team in a dynamic and supportive research environment. CIL provides opportunities for its research staff to engage in joint research as well as individual research. Research staff also have opportunities to attend regional and international conferences, workshops and symposiums, including the Rhodes Academy of Oceans Law and Policy, and are encouraged to public their research in a variety of forums. In addition to conducting research, members of the research team are expected to assist in planning and organising international and regional conferences, workshops and training courses for both academic and training capacity purposes; as well as carry out any other administrative duties necessary to further CIL’s vision and mission.

Qualifications

• PhD or equivalent graduate degree in international law (public international law, law of the sea or related field);
• At least 2 years of working experience;
• Demonstrable interest in oceans law and policy;
• Experience in working in a team and ability to work independently with minimal supervision;
• Must have working knowledge of English.

What you’ll do

As an Internal Service Management Team Lead, you’ll work with others to validate contractual agreements and, where changes or shortfalls to existing contracts are evident, escalate any issues with recommendations for recovery.

Alongside this, you’ll create and review management information to provide oversight, and achieve the delivery of our strategy. You’ll also collaborate with senior management to ensure that all aspects of our internal service management framework are implemented effectively.

Your top priorities will include:

• Acting as an expert in relation to the key principles of the continuity of internal supply chain policy requirements
• Understanding the key offshore regulators’ outsourcing policies and guidance notes
• Ensuring that the internal outsourcing of any activities is completed in line with regulatory requirements

In addition, you’ll need the ability to develop key working relationships with stakeholders, knowledge of the regulators approach to recovery and resolution and the ability to translate our continuity requirements.
