In addition to their teaching responsibilities, as per their main job description, the Head of Junior School Computer Science is responsible for the development and implementation of the Computer Science curriculum in the Junior School. Specific responsibilities include:
Curricular & co-curricular provision
- Oversight and development of the Computer Science curriculum including:
- Production and ongoing evaluation of schemes of work and unit plans.
- Liaison with the PYP Coordinator and class teachers to ensure that the curriculum meets the needs of the programme, including being suitably integrated into Units of Inquiry (UoI).
- Liaison with the MYP Coordinator and the Head of Computer Science to ensure that the curriculum provides suitable preparation for the study of the subject in the Senior School.
- Production and ongoing evaluation of assessment tasks and procedures.
- Maintenance of an up-to-date knowledge of the requirements of the PYP programme, and how Computer Science fits into it.
- Provision of support for staff teaching the course including appropriate training and the collation of a bank of teaching resources.
- Tracking of assessment data for students and liaison with class teachers and JSMT to ensure that students are provided with appropriate challenge and support where needed.
- Liaison with teachers in the First School and Lower School to support their planning for the Computer Science curriculum and ensure that it provides adequate preparation for subject-specific teaching from Grade 2.
- Contribution to the production and ongoing evaluation of the annual Computer Science Department Development Plan.
- Provision of curriculum information for school publications.
- Development and provision of subject-related co-curricular activities (CCAs) in the Junior School.
Pastoral care & duties
- Acting as a member of the Junior School pastoral team, providing support and mentoring for students and covering registrations and tutor periods (in place of acting as a House Tutor in the Senior School).
- Taking on break and lunch time supervisory duties in the Junior School as per published rotas (in place of doing so in the Senior School).
- Attendance at Junior School staff meetings and briefings (in place of doing so in the Senior School) and reporting back important messages to the rest of the department.
Safeguarding
- Abiding by the school safeguarding policy and keeping abreast of any changes.
- Have regard for, and promote, the need to safeguard students’ wellbeing, maintaining awareness of cultural differences and related matters when dealing with students.
