The job role

An excellent opportunity has come up at our Imerys Aluminates site at West Thurrock, which produces fused and sintered calcium illuminate binders - valued for their high heat resistance to corrosion, abrasion and heat. The 5-hectare site serves the European building chemistry, wastewater infrastructure, refractories, metallurgy and the mining industry with benchmark products.

You will be responsible for managing, maintaining and improving electrical and automation equipment and systems for Imerys Aluminates industrial/ production site.

The main responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Site Electrical Duty Holder
• Managing and execute electrical, automation and instrumentation work (including inspection, auditing, calibration, spare parts, drawings, risk assessments and reactive & preventive maintenance)
• Operation, managing and maintaining Siemens automation systems (PLCs/ PCS7/ SCADA/ WinCC/ S7-300/ HMIs) including fault finding, programming and updating.
• Manage ECI compliance and statutory activities (Fixed wire testing, HV maintenance, Earthing test, PAT, Arc flash testing, etc.)
• Work on and manage high voltage (HV) network and drives.
• Managing ECI projects (including designs, specifications, documentation, contract management, installation, commissioning, spare parts and training)
• Adhere to Health & Safety standards and ensure all ECI tasks are performed in compliance with regulations and company procedures.
• Participate in training, development and appointment of other industrial engineers.
• Respond to after hour consultation and provide technical support during equipment failures

This role will involve working at height and in confined spaces.

You will:

You’ll have a strong understanding of industrial electrical, control and instrumentation systems, such as valves, sensors, probes, and control circuits, with proven experience of fault finding, diagnostic and problem-solving skills.

You’ll also need to:

• Have a Degree in Electrical /Electronic/Control/ Automation Engineering or related engineering discipline
• Previous experience of working in a similar role within a heavy production / manufacturing/ process environment
• Have experience of programming, editing and fault finding on Siemens systems (PCS7), SCADA systems (WinCC) and communication network e.g. Profibus and Profinet
• Strong understanding and experience of mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic and process systems
• Be able to use Auto CAD and Trimble
• Hold a Health and Safety NEBOSH or IOSH Certification
• Willingness to respond to afterhours breakdowns
• Legally able to drive in the UK

The joint venture between Imerys and British Lithium:

Imerys British Lithium (IBL) is a joint venture between Imerys S.A. and Lithium Assets Ltd., formerly British Lithium, developing a world class micaceous lithium resource in Cornwall. IBL have developed unique, patented technology for the sustainable recovery of battery grade lithium carbonate from micaceous granite, with the goal of building the world’s first integrated lithium mine, beneficiation plant and refinery producing 20,000tpa of lithium carbonate – enough to support production in the UK of 350,000 electric vehicles per year.

The role: You will lead the development of IBL’s novel process technologies for refining and purifying lithium from lithium bearing mica. You will be responsible for the successful integration of refinery process technologies into the process design for the British Lithium Project.

You will be involved in leading dialogue with external parties, design engineers, and project stakeholders in defining, specifying and de-risking the process technology that will deliver lithium carbonate products to the market.

Your main responsibilities: You will lead the successful scale-up and de-risking of the lithium carbonate refinery process technologies and operating conditions through to commercial implementation whilst being responsible for;

• Leading scale-up and de-risking activities within the Refinery team, including planning and organising work programmes, facilitating change and driving execution.
• The commercial design of the Lithium Carbonate Refinery (LCR) process, leveraging internal expertise and that of third-party equipment / technology suppliers.
• Ownership of technical risk management for the LCR process design. This includes maintaining a technical risk register, specifying and executing trials and test work and incorporating findings into the process design to reduce technical risk.
• The production of improvement capital requests and project management for implantation of improvement capital projects.

Other key responsibilities:

• Being a key process technology expert for pyrometallurgical, hydrometallurgical and chemical process technologies.
• Having an input to business decision making in the presence of company Directors and senior stakeholders. Requires timely preparation and delivery of compelling and robust reports & presentations.
• Execution of process scale-up programmes at pilot scale. Drive the creation of analytical and process data to develop robust understandings of chemical processes. Subsequently, maintain a robust culture of intellectual property development and capture.
• The process engineering deliverables for the design of the commercial LCR plant, including engineering design packages, equipment specifications, input on philosophies, plant layouts, risk reviews, permits, procurement, quality processes, and plant commissioning.
• For managing the delivery of Refinery pilot scale trials and operations.

What we ask you in return:

• Have a degree-level qualification in process/chemical engineering, with chartered professional status beneficial.
• Have proven experience of managing and developing others.
• Have proven project management experience.
• Have demonstrable experience of managing multiple stakeholders across sites and functions with a clear collaboration mindset.
• Have experience in the scale-up of chemicals process technologies within a chemical or mining environment, with experience with Lithium chemistries would be advantageous
• Have knowledge of health & safety standards and COSHH regulations and, ideally, have a vocational health and safety qualification.

During periods of extended operating campaigns, intense activity and / or reduced staff availability, the role may be required to undertake any activities to support the project, subject to adequate competency for specialist tasks

The role: Your role is to lead the bench scale development of novel process technologies for extracting lithium from micaceous granites. You will be responsible for the successful execution of bench-scale trials and provision of scientific design data for the British Lithium Project.

This will involve dialogue with external parties, design engineers, and project stakeholders in defining, specifying and de-risking the process technology that will deliver lithium carbonate product to the market.

Your main responsibilities: You will manage the operations of the Metallurgical Laboratory, including development of the analytical capabilities necessary for process development and QA/QC for commercial implementation and bench-scale process development for the Lithium Carbonate Refinery (LCR) whilst;

• Managing the Process Development team of Scientists undertaking bench-scale process development and pilot plant support.
• Supporting the development and execution of the Technical Development Programme.
• Providing experimental designs, workflow planning and organisation for bench scale trials.
• Managing the interpretation of data and the technical deliverables of the team.
• Ensuring the effective transfer of scientific data into process engineering deliverables for the design of the commercial CAB and LCR plants.
• Producing technical memoranda, progress reports and technical report sections for key Project phases.
• Providing technical expertise in process chemistry, laboratory processes, laboratory safety, and analytical methods.
• Having an input to business decision making in the presence of company Directors and senior stakeholders.
• Overseeing key projects within the Metallurgical Laboratory, ensuring the facility remains capable of delivering the needs of the Technical Development Programme.

What we ask you in return:

• You will ideally be experienced in mineral and chemical process technologies within a mining environment.
• Have a degree level qualification in Chemistry or an earth science
• Have experience of working in a process laboratory environment, with knowledge of inorganic chemical processes and lithium chemistries
• Have knowledge of health & safety standards and COSHH regulations and, ideally, have a vocational health and safety qualification
• Working knowledge of process design for mineral and chemical processes.
• Have proven experience of managing and developing others.
