Lonza Pharma & Biotech has an open position for a paid internship with the Biomanufacturing R&D team at our location in Bend, OR.  This is an excellent opportunity to join a challenging, dynamic, and cross-disciplinary team of scientists and engineers who focus on improving the manufacturing of biologics medicines. The position will be a 3 – 4 month term, at minimum, with a preference for a 6 month commitment.

An intern with the Mammalian Manufacturing R&D team at Lonza will be responsible for:

• Daily operations of lab scale bioreactors
• Building, setup and maintenance of bioreactors
• Making precise media solutions for bioreactor experiments
• Restocking, cleaning, and tracking inventories
• Keeping the lab running as efficiently as possible
• Maintaining accurate and precise lab records for data analysis and traceability
• Planning and executing an individual project to be presented to the team at the end of the internship

Position requirements:

• Currently studying biology, chemistry, engineering, or a related life science
• Enthusiastic about the biopharmaceutical industry and learning about industry technology
• Interest in taking ownership of project aspects
• Displays good problem solving skills
• Exhibits time management skills

Skills that will be acquired through this internship will be:

• How to work in an industrial mammalian cell culture laboratory environment

Lonza Pharma & Biotech has an opening for an experienced Site OT Engineer. The Site OT Engineer leads the management, implementation and configuration of the OT systems (predominantly MES/eBR, lab systems) at the site, in alignment with relevant stakeholders like system owners and IT. The site OT Engineer is responsible to keep the OT systems configured to fulfill the business needs; validation, security and compliance requirements; as well as to ensure operational support and inspection readiness.

Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• Develop and implement OT systems roadmap that is in line with site digital strategy
• Partner with site business departments (e.g. manufacturing, process development, quality) and translate business needs into OT systems configuration
• Manage routine operational support and performance of OT systems in scope
• Ensure compliance of OT systems with all relevant local, global, industry and regulatory policies and guidelines; participate in audits as required
• Support Project Management in the delivery of capital projects on time, within budget and according to scope and specifications; organize and lead project updates to project stakeholders
• Act as System Owner for the site OT systems; or ensure agreed delegation of system owner responsibility across individuals within site departments
• Represent OT in customer meetings to receive/deliver information, request and requirements
• Manage system SOP’s and Disaster Recovery; support establishment of BCP (Business Continuity Plan)
• Liaise and manager external vendors for OT systems (maintenance contract, support services ....)
• Partner with IT with regards to ensuring IT requirements & deliverables are well defined, agreed and met (e.g. IT Infrastructure & hardware, IT security & compliance/vulnerabilities remediation, systems integration, dependency on global IT platforms)

Key requirements:

• Bachelor’s Degree required, at minimum
• Ability to identify, steer and implement OT solutions that support site business goals and which can technically and operationally improve the performance, quality and profitability of the site
• Able to multi-task a mix and wide range of operational support and project activities
• Can effectively partner in a cross-functional environment; with local and global stakeholders
• Good communicator (written and verbal); with ability to explain complex technical topics in business understandable statements
• Attention to details and strong focus to planning
• A “take-ownership” attitude and mindset

Lonza Pharma & Biotech has an opening for an experienced Automation Engineer, Group Lead at their Bend, Oregon location. As Group Lead, Automation Engineering you will be responsible for guiding the site automation strategy and collaborating with and mentoring other automation engineers. A successful candidate will demonstrate familiarity with automated industrial control systems as well as knowledge of IT/OT, network & security systems. Enthusiasm for project and team leadership, a collaborative mindset; working with other colleagues on multiple projects in a fast-paced environment, open communication, and a desire to learn are key attributes.

Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• Lead and work collaboratively with automation team colleagues, lead electrical and automation designs, communicate openly, and foster a learning environment for the team
• Set site strategy for automated systems and infrastructure
• Support 24/7 operation of GMP process and facility equipment and control systems with the goal of maximum uptime.
• Assist in the installation, operation, maintenance and repair of automated process and facility equipment and control systems
• Support equipment startup, commissioning, and qualification activities
• Troubleshoot and repair automated industrial control systems to support manufacturing and development operations
• Perform hands-on, detailed work, in a fast-paced manufacturing environment
• Work in close collaboration with IT/OT/Network Infrastructure and Security Teams to ensure a reliable and secure automated manufacturing environment
• Support updates to and maintenance of data historian systems (OSIsoft PI System)

Key requirements:

• Bachelor’s Degree (preferred), Associates Degree (minimum) in Industrial Controls / Automation / Electrical Engineering or similar field
• Experience and enthusiasm for leading projects and teams
• Experience working with industrial automation, instrumentation and controls, preferably in a manufacturing environment
• Experience in biotech/pharmaceutical or similar regulated industries preferred
• After hours support of manufacturing operations on an on-call rotation basis
• Electrical troubleshooting experience and familiarity with safety practices a plus
• Familiarity with Allen Bradley PLC and HMI development environment, Studio 5000 and supporting FactoryTalk systems
• Knowledge of 2D CAD systems to support electrical and system documentation preferred
• Familiarity with P&IDs a plus
• Familiarity with SCADA and Building Automation Systems preferred
• Familiarity with IT/OT, network systems, and security a plus
