The Advanced MSA must assist with clinic access contingency plans by adjusting appointment times, location, or dates as well as shift patients to other healthcare providers as conflict with staffing and/or coverage occurs. The incumbent may be required to serve on more than one PACT or in more than one Specialty Clinic area, or rotate in any MSA area. Major duties include, but are not limited too:

Psychiatrists within the Mental Health Service are able to perform and teach all of the services required in the practice of psychiatry to psychiatry residents. Section Chief duties include but are not limited to the following:

The Community Living Center is comprised of Three (3) distinct neighborhoods: a 10-bed Hospice Unit, and a 66-bed combination Long Term Care/Short Stay Unit/Rehabilitation. The program is designed to provide optimal comprehensive resident care within available resources and is consistent with the Health Care System and Nursing Service mission, philosophy, and goals. The length of stay for veterans in the unit may range from a few days to several years. The length of stay is determined by the individual needs of the veteran, potential for rehabilitation, and availability of resources for discharge to the least restrictive environment. Discharge planning and patient/family education is initiated upon admission and continues throughout the veterans stay in the Community Living Center.

The Restorative Registered Nurse within the Community Living Center will oversee a program designed to improve or maintain the functional ability of Veteran residents, so they can achieve their highest level of well-being possible. This program concept actively focuses on achieving and maintaining optimal physical, mental, and psychosocial functioning. Generally, restorative care is initiated when a resident is discharged from formal physical, occupational, or speech rehabilitation therapy. The Community Living Center has an interdisciplinary team that includes staffing representing Nursing, Dietary, Social Work, Pharmacy, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Nurse Practitioners, and Physicians. The interdisciplinary team meets each week to discuss care planning and needs of patients. Nurses are competent in the management of patients with complex diseases such as Diabetes, CHF, COPD, Cancer, and Dementia. Staff receives education in other areas, including pain management and end of life care.

The Memory Disorder physician will be part of an interdisciplinary team of health care providers, caring for Veterans with dementia. The physician will be assigned to the Neurology Service and will see patients at the North Charleston and Charleston Neurology outpatient clinic. This involves outpatient neurologic consultations, review of screening results completed by the Neuropsychologists and development of treatment plans and future care for veterans. The Should the Memory Disorder physician will collaborate with other cognitive specialists from neurology, geriatrics, geriatric psychiatry, and social work services in the interdisciplinary management of dementia patients. Anti-amyloid infusion therapy and Amyloid Pet Scans are available to the physician at this facility. Suitable candidates will be offered up to 50% of unassigned clinical time for research purposes. This research will be conducted under the umbrella of the state-of-the-art VA Brain Health Center and National Coordinating Center for Research on Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementias. Should the Memory Disorders physician have a need to refer patients to a subspecialist, these patients can be sent to the Charleston VA neurology clinic for consultations in the fields of epilepsy, headaches, movement disorders, neuromuscular medicine and , MS, and dementia. Charleston VA Neurology Service also has EEG/EMG testing, neurology inpatient service and an epilepsy monitoring unit and is partnering with the academic affiliate, Medical University of South Carolina, on educating medical students, residents and fellows. available. 1. Conducts capital asset and infrastructure planning and design for the medical facility spanning initial strategic planning, concept development, design, construction, and effective implementation of complex buildings, utilities, and medical support systems.
2. Manages healthcare engineering project design and administers construction in accordance with VA policies and procedures, VA Design Guides, VA Design Manuals, VA Master Specifications and related industry codes and standards.
3. Performs healthcare engineering project construction management and post project activities while ensuring continuity of building and utility services for medical facility operations.
4. Assists in the provision of a continuing education program for clinical staff and maintenance personnel addressing the principles and application of building and utility systems in the delivery of health care. This includes a curriculum that addresses the safe and effective use of medical gases, emergency power, ventilation, and other healthcare infrastructure related technology. This requires skill to effectively communicate, both orally and in writing, with a wide variety of individuals, including technical and professional clinical staff, to communicate technical information.
5. Assists in development and implementation of the environment of care program that meets current Joint Commission, Food and Drug Administration (FDA), College of American Pathologists (CAP), NFPA, and VA requirements, particularly as it relates to construction safety and infection control.
