• Lead Field crews to implement vegetation and ecological restoration project work.

These positions are in the division of Visitor and Resource Protection. Incumbents are assigned to the Preventive Search and Rescue (PSAR) program under Yosemite Emergency Services. PSAR rangers are based in the Yosemite Valley with patrol locations throughout the park.

The PSAR program aims to reduce injuries and fatalities in Yosemite through public outreach, including social media, formal presentations, and relevant and timely signage. PSAR rangers conduct informal public outreach while on day hikes, overnight patrols, and staffing information tables. Rangers provide visitors with information on current conditions, help with trip planning, and discuss potential safety concerns. They help enforce park regulations through education. PSAR rangers also provide oversight for the daily activities of PSAR interns and volunteers.

PSAR Rangers participate in Search and Rescue and Emergency Medical response. They are responsible for maintaining PSAR, SAR, and EMS equipment and vehicles. PSAR Rangers may participate in advanced training such as Technical Rope Rescue or Aviation training based on their prior training and experience. As part of the all-hazard emergency response team PSAR rangers may be required to drive an ambulance.

Physical Demands: The work involves extensive periods of standing and walking, in some cases over rough surfaces or inclines, carrying backpacks, tools, rescue equipment, etc.

Yosemite National Park, California, known worldwide for its spectacular natural beauty is the backdrop for this position. Sitting astride the Sierra Nevada Mountains, the park covers 1,182 square miles of varied wilderness ecosystems, from river valleys to alpine meadows to lofty 13,000 foot high peaks. Yosemite Valley is located 208 miles from San Francisco, 81 miles from Merced, and 94 miles from Fresno. Shopping, medical, postal and laundry services are available in the park. Elevation at the Valley floor is approximately 4,000 feet and 2,200 feet in El Portal. The park is open year-round with the majority of activities occurring during the busy season March through October.

Positions are being recruited in both Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks including positions in the Lodgepole, Grant Grove and Cedar Grove Subdistricts.

EMTs will be assigned ambulance duty, responding as the initial provider for most EMS calls. EMTs will request assistance from other trained personnel as necessary. The park employs approximately 25 permanent rangers who have certifications ranging from EMT to Paramedic. The parks respond to roughly 350 calls annually ranging from first aid to advanced life support. EMTs respond to roughly ten fatal incidents each year. EMTs will conduct appropriate patient assessment, make a transport decision, and work within established NPS Protocols under medical control. EMTs will make base hospital contact via phone and radio patch. Patient care will be documented appropriately in the field to allow for electronic reporting after the call. EMTs will keep supplies stocked and notify their supervisor when supplies need to be ordered. Ambulances will be cleaned and organized for effective response. Equipment will be decontaminated and cleaned after every call. EMTs will plan, prepare for, and execute EMS training for local responders. EMTs may conduct other emergency services operations with appropriate certifications including Search and Rescue, structural and wildland fire, extrication, and visitor services. The parks respond to roughly 150 SAR incidents a year, with a handful of them requiring technical rescue. EMTs will be responsible to respond as directed to manage foot and vehicle traffic in congested areas. EMTs may be assigned project work during slow periods or intermittent down time.

Housing: Available rental housing units may include tent cabins, mobile homes, apartments, or traditional houses and housing/rooms will likely be shared with other employees, interns, volunteers, etc. Units may be rustic, located in wilderness areas, with few if any modern conveniences. Pets (other than service pets) and overnight guests are not allowed; units are to house assigned employees only.

• Olympic NP: Port Angeles WA (GS-05 Only) Not a telework eligible position, You may be expected to travel for this position up to 1 nights/month, Drivers license MAY be required.
• Upper Columbia Basin I&M Network: Bend, OR (GS-5 only) Not a telework eligible position, You may be expected to travel for this position up to 12 nights per month, Drivers License required.
• Yosemite NP: Yosemite, CA Telework eligible position with supervisors approval, You may be expected to travel for this position up to 16 nights/month, Drivers license MAY be required.

• Make field observations of natural resource conditions. Record all data collected and ensure adequate quality control. Perform routine and recurring testing of collected samples.
• Conduct routine resource monitoring programs for evaluating rare, threatened and endangered plant species, vegetation communities, population dynamics, ecosystem relationships, and public health/safety issues.
• Carry out a variety of field activities such as the plant surveys, control of non-native and invasive plant or insect species, and enhancement of native plant populations.
• Utilize a variety of computer programs to compile, reduce, store, retrieve, and report data and other resource management information.
• Utilize databases to enter and organize collected field data and uses standard statistical methods in the preparation of draft reports.
• Conduct invasives removal efforts using a variety of removal methods, including manual removal, mechanical removal using potentially chainsaws, and herbicide.
• Conduct revegetation including installation of container plants, salvaged plants, and divisions, as well as collection and sowing of seeds.
• Perform data collection, data entry, and spatial mapping and analysis using GIS (ArcGIS) and Global Positioning System (GPS) devices, including use of Trimble and mobile units running GIS software programs such as Field Maps.
