Serco are recruiting for a Management Accountant to join their NorthLink Ferries team. Serco Group Plc delivers services to governments and other institutions who serve the public or protect vital national interests.
NorthLink Ferries has been operated by Serco since 2012 and provides a Lifeline ferry service between mainland Scotland and the Northern Isles of Orkney and Shetland.
The role is responsible for supporting and working within the NorthLink Ferries Finance Team. In this key role, you will support Serco business leaders to deliver profitable and sustainable growth for services. Day to day this means working with Operational teams to ensure robust financial control is maintained to support financial performance. You will assist the Finance Manager in any duties/work responsibilities associated with preparation of Financial Data for reporting financial performance to satisfy internal reporting/governance requirements.
Main Accountabilities:
Winning good business
- Maintain effective, open and regular communication with operational and financial management
Executing brilliantly
- Responsibility for maintaining tight robust internal control standards and complying with financial legislation and reporting

- Work with wider Finance team to ensure consistent, accurate and efficient information
Profitable and sustainable
- Prepare monthly financial reports, commentaries and statements
- Ownership of Accounts Receivable processes including invoicing, reconciliations, direct debits, collection of debt, refunds and credit notes
- Managing the Purchase Ledger Controller and overseeing financial activities of Site Purchasing Co-ordinators
- Ownership of Petty Cash and Float reconciliation process
- Reconcile Inter and Intra company analysis
- Assist in the preparation of forecasting and projections, liaising with budget holders
- Balance sheet and revenue reconciliations
- Assist in compliance and statutory reporting
- Cost variance analysis and investigations
- Assist the Finance Manager and wider management team in the preparation of financial information and analysis
- To support the management of the accounting and financial systems
- Ad hoc reporting as required
What you’ll need to do the role:
Essential Qualifications
- Part qualified/working towards Chartered, or similar, Accountancy Qualification
- Experience in a high-volume accounts payable/receivable environment
Essential Technical and Professional Knowledge and Skills
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, and proven people and organizational skills
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite
- Experience of SAP is beneficial, but not essential
- Stakeholder Management Skills
- Highly numerate and strong analytical skills
Essential Experiences
- 2+ years’ experience in similar role with finance experience, ideally in a busy commercial environment
- Team player and responsible individual who takes initiative and ownership
- Ability to identify and communicate problems and discuss various solutions
- Ability to prioritize tasks and strong attention to detail
- Ability to understand transactional processes and implement improvements
